True friends help us see it as it is
G ood friends are
hard to find.
I look around
in my own life,
and I can come up with
only a few people that. I
know are solid friends.
What, does that, look
like? Most, people we call
friends are really more
like happy
associates
rather than
true friends.
True
friends are
those we
trust to tell
us the truth
no matter
what.. That,
means tell
ing us things
we may
not. want, to
hear some
times and
confronting us for our
benefit., not. theirs. This
is so different, then social
media friends or those
that, associate with us for
what, we can do for them
or what, they can do for
us.
People we trust and
love that, love and trust
us back with genuine
nature and sincerity are
to be considered special
and rare. We can agree
that, true friends are a
gift, we often times do
not. deserve but. we are
thankful to have.
For all of us that, call
ourselves Christians, it.
is even more imperative
that, we surround our
selves with those who are
true friends. We tend to
Rev. Jeff Dean
select, these people, but.
sometimes God places
others in our way to be
Christ-like friends that,
we need at. a given time.
Consider David and
Nathan.
Of course, most, of us
know about David kill
ing Goliath in a show of
strong faith.
Most, of us
also know
that. David,
during a
time of weak
resolve, com
mitted scan
dalous adul
tery with
Bat.hsheba.
This is
where
Nathan
comes in.
Nathan,
a prophet.,
made a gutsy move
in confronting David
about, his actions with
Bat.hsheba. It. could have
gone badly for Nathan;
but. with his wise use
of a parable, David was
deeply convicted. In 2
Samuel 12, Nathan gave
David some harsh truths
about, his actions. But.
these hard truths made
David a man that, was
exalted later in the New
Testament as an ancestor
of Jesus and a “man after
God’s own heart.” It’s one
of the biggest, spiritual
turn-arounds of all time,
and it. had everything to
do with an unlikely “real
friend” doing something
and talking to David.
What, was the result?

David apparently penned
Psalm 51 shortly after
the confrontation. This
Psalm was an account of
how David confessed his
sin and reconciled with a
Holy God. He states “For
I know my transgressions,
and my sin is always
before me. Against You,
You only, have I sinned
and done what is evil
in your sight; so You are
right in Your verdict and
justified when You judge.
Surely I was sinful at
birth, sinful from the time
my mother conceived, me.
Yet You desired, faithful
ness even in the womb;
You taught me wisdom in
that secret place. Cleanse
me with hyssop, and I
will be clean; wash me,
and. I will be whiter than.
snow. Let me hear joy and
gladness; let the bones
You have crushed rejoice.
Hide Your face from my
sins, and blot out all my
iniquity. Create in me a
pure heart,, O God, and
renew a steadfast spirit
within me. Do not cast
me from Your presence
or take your Holy Spirit
from me. Restore to me
the joy of Your salvation
and grant me a willing
spirit, to sustain me. ”
(Psalm 51: 3-12)
Nathan had shared
some truths with David
that, compelled him to
respond to his mistake
with proper action. The
next, things David did
become important, to all
of us in our ability to rec
oncile with God the way
we should.
We are to trust God’s
mercy, own the sin, plea
for cleansing, ask for joy
and purity to replace our
sin, and commit, to hav
ing a humble heart.. More
than a record of David’s
confession, Psalm 51 is a
picture of God’s view of
us when we blow it. He’s
merciful and compassion
ate. This, along with His
soft, heart., is why David
later was described as
a man after God’s own
heart.
Further, this psalm
offers hope for all of us
as we allow God to clean
us up from our dirt.. For
David, there was no bet
ter true friend at. that,
moment, than Nathan;
what, can be said about,
yours?
