Mary Persons boys
soccer team improved
to 5-0-1 (1-0 in
2-AAAA) by winning
its region opener over
West Laurens 5-1
on Friday in Dexter.
When the Bulldogs
and Raiders meet in
any sport it’s usually
chippy, and Friday’s
game, which featured
three red cards and five
yellow cards, was no
exception.
“The ref was in over
his head,” said coach
Allen Luton. “He lost
control of the game.”
While MP owned the
Raiders last year, the
Bulldogs led just 1-0 at
the half courtesy of a
Dawson Daniel goal.
Luton said he had
to warn his yellow
card recipients at the
half that, they could ill
afford another card lest
they be ejected.
Luton said his boys
responded and took
control of the game in
the second half, tack
ing on four more goals
en route to a 5-0 lead.
Midfielder William
Atkins had three of
them while senior Alex
Rivera added the fifth.
MP outshot the Raiders
14-12 and keeper Brock
Hulsey had eight saves.
Luton said his only
disappointment was
giving up a late goal
that, ended the shutout,
and gave MP a 5-1 win.
Still, Luton said he was
happy that, his rather
inexperienced team
kept, its head despite
an intense road game
with some adversity.
West. Laurens
dropped to 4-2 overall,
0-1 in region play.
On Tuesday, Feb. 20,
MP drew a 4-4 tie at.
home against. Class
AAAAAA Houston
County. It. felt, like a
defeat, for the Bulldogs,
though, since they led
3-1 at. one point..

Lady Dogs stomp West Laurens in region opener

Mary Persons’ girls soccer team suffered its first, loss of the season last, week but. rebounded by
winning its first, region contest of the year over West. Laurens.
The Lady Bulldogs improved to 4-1-1 on the season by beating the Lady Raiders 1-0 on the
road. Taylor Buffington scored with just minutes left, in a contest that, was knotted 0-0 for the
better part, of 80 minutes. The girls had demolished West. Laurens last, year and coach Dallas
Hall said they just did not. play well.
“It. was an extremely poor game,” said Hall. “And I told the girls that.. I think we had a lack of
focus because we thought., ‘hey, we handled them easily last. year’. Hopefully it. wakes them up a
bit..”
Hall said he’s urged his girls to remember that, all road region games are going to be challeng
ing.
Told that, his girls were ranked No. 5 in the state, Hall said that, wouldn’t, have been the case if
anyone had seen the game on Friday.
“We’ve got. to turn it. on,” said Hall. “We need to fix a lot of things.”
Hall said MP played better on Tuesday in a 2-0 loss to Class AAAAAA Houston County. The
Lady Bears struck first, just minutes into the contest on a long cross that, didn’t, appear to be even
aimed at. the goal.
The Lady Bulldogs hung with the faster Bears the rest, of the way until Houston County scored
an insurance goal with about, three minutes left.
“It. was like we ran out. of gas,” said Hall. “I wasn’t, happy about, that, second goal.”
Hall said playing a faster team is hard on MP’s large field when the Lady Dogs don’t, have
many subs.
The Mary Persons girls soccer team also shut. out. Ola 6-0 on Feb. 16.
The Bulldogs controlled possession for most, of the contest and sophomore striker Abbie Davis
had four goals in dropping the Mustangs to 2-3 on the year.
