Citizen of Year
celebrates
90th b !, *hday
Glover Stuart, named Monroe County's Citizen of the Year last
month, celebrated his 90th birthday on Feb. 29. Of course,
there is no Feb. 29 this year, as it's not a leap year, so he's
celebrating for the entire month of March. Flappy Birthday,
Glover Stuart!
Everyone is Welcome!

New crossing at New Providence on hold
By Richard Dumas
forsyth@mymcr.net
A new entrance and
railroad crossing planned
for New Providence
Baptist Church is on hold
after nearby property
owners protested the
plan on Thursday
Monroe County
Commissioners held a
public meeting at New
Providence Baptist
Church on Thursday
March 1 to consider
options for improving
the railroad crossing
in front of the Hwy. 41
South church. District
3 commissioner John
Ambrose proposed clos
ing two crossings near
the church, including the
one directly in front of it,
and replacing it with a
new, wider crossing with
safety arms and gates a
few hundred yards north
of the current crossing. It
would go across from the
end point of Reedy Creek
Road. The safer, wider
crossing would feed into
the church’s new parking
lot on the same side as
the church’s new worship
center. Officials have
noted the current church
entrance is unsafe,
too steep and not wide
enough. New Providence
pastor Brian Moore
said about 700 vehicles
per week go across the
current narrow, steep
crossing to his church,
currently the county’s
largest by Sunday morn
ing worship attendance.
Ambrose said the
project would cost
about $1 million but
Norfolk Southern had
agreed to pay for it, and
the Georgia DOT also
planned to contribute
$470,000 to install the
crossing gates.
Ambrose said late
District 2 commissioner
Jim Ham had been
working on the project
for several years prior
to his December 2016
death, and Ambrose, who
formerly worked for the
railroad, took over the
efforts upon Ham’s pass
ing.
While most of about 25
persons in attendance,
mostly New Providence
members, approved of
a new crossing, nearby
landowners Chris and
Connie Ham expressed
concerns about closing
the crossing at the adja
cent tract, the former
location of a sawmill,
just north of the church
that is currently vacant.
The Hams co-own a tract
of land just north of the
Williams Bros, tract.
Ambrose said the
neighboring landowners,
Williams Bros. Trucking,
Inc., have not responded
to inquiries on closing
the crossing and did
not attend Thursday’s
hearing. After hearing
concerns, Moore said he
supports widening the
current crossing with
out building a new one.
Moore said his church’s
initial request was to
widen the crossing, but
it was Norfolk Southern
officials who suggested
closing it and opening a
new one altogether.
Ambrose has said that
Norfolk Southern would
not approve that plan,
but new District 2 com
missioner Eddie Rowland
vowed to spend about
$30,000 in his district’s
road funds to widen the
crossing if it gets railroad
approval.
Ambrose said he would
contact Norfolk Southern
officials again to see if
it would they will allow
the existing crossing
to be widened. District
1 commissioner Larry
Evans then instructed
New Providence leaders
and members to sign a
petition letter to Norfolk
Southern requesting a
wider crossing.

Alex Kinsella was introduced to health and fitness through football in seventh
grade. Fie found that he enjoyed the weight training sessions more than the team
sport he was training for, so after one season he quit the B-team and continued lifting
weights.
In high school in Texas, he competed briefly in powerlifting before moving to Forsyth
and graduating from Mary Persons. At Mercer University, Alex earned a
degree in Information Science & Technology in 2017 and volun
teered for the Strength & Conditioning Department as an intern coach where he
helped guide athletes through early morning team workouts.
By making mistakes in his own training, Alex realized that productive exercise
is a luxury. FHis goal is to help others develop the mindset they need to earn that
luxury predictably and actually enjoy picking things up and putting them down.
He believes that both professional athletes and weekend joggers should approach
exercise in similar ways—and that there should be nothing intimidating about that
