SPRING Home & Garden 2018
WILDER
Continued from Front
tional cages. Wilder said
the Florida Weave involves
strings tied from one end of
a row to the other to prop
up tomato plants.
“There’s no way I can
build cages for 100-some-
thing tomato plants,” says
Wilder.
So what advice does
Wilder have for new gar
deners?
First, Wilder encourages
them to get a $9 soil test
from the UGA extension
office to see what their soil
needs. Wilder said with his
garden area growing into
new areas of his yard, he
had to test some of the new
soil this year, and had to
add some lime and 10-10-
10 fertilizer.
“It’s gonna be interesting
to see how the new garden
does,” he said.
Wilder said he’s also
excited to try out his new
irrigation system. He had
to use his new tractor to
furrow down about six
inches before laying down
drop tape, basically a cheap
irrigation hose with holes
every 12 inches that applies
water to the root system
rather than from above like
a traditional sprinkler.
Wilder said he had to fix
his burned out well pump
before he could plant his
bigger garden this year be
cause buying city water to
irrigate, which also requires
a sewage fee, would’ve been
exorbitant. His well pumps
out 7 gallons per minute.
Wilder’s advice for
wannabe gardeners is: Be
patient. Despite all his new
equipment and ambitious
plans this spring, Wilder
said a late cold snap —
temps went down to 36 de
grees one night — burned
many of the leaves on his
tomato plants. With more
cold weather expected,
Wilder said he plans to
cover his tender plants

“You learn patience,” said
Wilder. “You can get dis
couraged. You can’t predict
mother nature. It’s like my
children, you watch them
every day and hope for the
best.”
And it often pays off.
Wilder said he’s still eating
peas they put up from his
garden two years ago.
And, finally, Wilder said
it’s important to get some
rest. He said sometimes he
and his wife are working in
the garden and he’s ready to
go in, but she won’t stop.
“She can outwork me
sometimes,” laughed
Wilder. “I wish she would
just quit and go in so I can
go in!
