Gaines named region
shot put champion

The MP girls track squad
placed a disappointing
fourth in the region at
Spalding on Monday after
capturing back-to-back Re
gion 2-AAAA titles in 2016
and 2017. The Lady Dogs
had one individual cham
pion in Precious Gaines,
who took first place in the
shot put.
MP totaled 101 points to
finish behind third-place
West Laurens’ total of 120
points. Howard was the
region meet champion
with 174 points, followed
by second-place Spalding
with 131 points. Perry and
Upson-Lee finished fifth
and sixth, respectively.
Howard s India Turk won
the individual award for
capturing the most indi
vidual points at the region
meet.

MP head coach David
Carey said he’d never seen
cold, windy conditions
like those on Monday in
any previous region meet
during his distinguished
coaching career.
Carey said, “Never like
this. This is the first time
I’ve ever experienced this
type of weather on the final
day of track.”
In its final tuneup before
the Region 2-AAAA cham
pionship meet, the MP girls
placed third with 90 points
in a six-team competition
at FPD on Wednesday.
Stratford Academy was
the boys champion with a
total of 150 points, followed
by home FPD with 140
points. Other teams partici
pating in order of highest
to lowest finish included:
John Milledge, Mount de
Sales and Tattnall Square.
MP had two individual
champions at FPD with
Precious Gaines taking first
place in the shot put with a
heave of 31 feet, 1 inch and
Cheyla Tafella finishing
first in the pole vault with
a vault of 8 feet. Also, MP’s
No. 1 4 x 400-meter relay
team captured first place

who placed seventh in the
100-meter hurdles with
a time of 20.13 seconds
and sixth in the 300-me-
ter hurdles with a time of
57.2 seconds, Nicole Grier,
who placed fifth in the
300-meter hurdles with
a time of 55.54 seconds,
Destiny Middleton, who
placed fourth in the long
jump with a leap of 15 feet,
4 inches, Daizha Outlaw,
who placed fifth in the long
jump with a leap of 15 feet,
1 inch, and Erin Hampton,
who placed second in the
discus with a throw of 80
feet, 5 inches. Also, MP’s
No. 2 4 x 100-meter relay
team placed second with a
time of 52.93 seconds.

varsity girls track team
will next compete at 10
a.m. on Saturday, April
28 in the GHSA AAAA
state sectional competi
tion at Kinnett Stadium
in Columbus. Athletes
from Regions 1-AAAA,
2-AAAA, 5-AAAA and
6-AAAA will square off for
spots in the AAAA state
finals to be contested at
Valhalla Stadium in Rome
from May 10-12.

The Monroe County
Middle School boys and
girls track squads wrapped
up their seasons at the area
championship meet at
Spalding on Saturday.
While the Monroe
County boys did not have
any top-three finishers,
several Monroe County
girls accomplished the feat.
Monroe County’s Camp
bell Brown was the girls
individual champion of
both the 100 meters and
200 meters. Brown also an
chored the champion girls
4 x 100-meter relay team
along with Annaya Barkley,
Amya Webb and Alyssa
Green. Also, Monroe
County’s Jaliyah Johnson
finished as the runner-up
in the 800 meters.
In a four-team meet at
Stratford Academy on
March 22, the Monroe
County Middle School
boys and girls track teams
had numerous top-three
finishers.
On the boys side, D.J.
Martinez finished in first
place in both the 100
meters and the 200 meters
as well as in the long jump
and was also a member of
the victorious 4 x 100-me-
ter relay team. Monroe
County also took first place
in the 4 x 400-meter relay
while Tre Walker captured
the 400-meter race. Other
boys high finishers in
cluded: Cam Casser, who
placed third in the 100-me-
ter hurdles, Brandon
Alford, who placed third
in the 200 meters, Jackson
Campbell, who placed
third in the 400 meters, and
Walker, who placed second
in the long jump.
As for the girls, Brown
took first place in both the
100 and 200-meter races
and was a member of the
victorious 4 x 100-meter
relay team. Monroe County
also finished first in the
4 x 400-meter relay race.
Other girls high finishers
included: Zora Bigham,
who placed third in the
long jump, Niah Bigham,
who placed second in the
high jump, Aniyah Barkley,
who placed second in the
100 meters, Tenley Pelis-
sier, who placed third in
the 100-meter hurdles and
Meredith Leverett, who
placed third in the 800 me
ters. Also, Monroe County
had a runner-up finish in
the 4 x 100-meter relay and
a third place finish in the 4
x 400-meter relay.
Other participants at the
March 22 meet included:

NOTICE OF SPECIAL ELECTION
GEORGIA, MONROE
Monroe County Board of Elections, SUPERINTENDENT OF ELECTIONS for the above State
and County, DO HEREBY CERTIFY THAT:
WHEREAS, in the 2010 Georgia General Assembly, the House and Senate passed
House Bill 277, known as the Transportation Investment Act of 2010, to provide 12 special tax
districts across the State and to provide for a special district transportation sales and use tax in
such special districts; and
WHEREAS, in accordance with Code Section 48-8-243 of the Transportation Invest
ment Act of 2010, the Middle Georgia special district Roundtable, of which Monroe County is a
part, officially approved a Final Investment List to be funded through the special district transporta
tion sales and use tax; and
WHEREAS, the special one percent (1%) sales and use tax will not exceed a projected
revenue generation amount of $637,746,847 for the Middle Georgia special district, and shall not
exceed ten (10) years in duration commencing October 1,2018; and
WHEREAS, Seventy-Five percent (75%) of the projected revenue generation amount
will fund the approved Final Investment List of the Middle Georgia special tax district and Twenty-
Five percent (25%) of the projected revenue generation amount will be directly distributed to the
cities and counties of the Middle Georgia special tax district by formula for local transportation
uses; and
WHEREAS, the Middle Georgia Roundtable has made a resolution to the Superin
tendents of Election of the Middle Georgia special tax district, as specified in the Official Code of
Georgia Annotated 48-8-244, to notify the election superintendent to issue the call for election for
the purpose of submitting to the electors of the county the question of whether such sales and use
tax shall be granted for approval or rejection; and
WHEREAS, in accordance with Code Section 48-8-244, the election results will be
tabulated per district and if more than one-half of the votes cast throughout the special district are
in favor of levying the tax, then the tax will be levied in said special district as specified; and
WHEREAS, the Final Investment List to be undertaken and completed utilizing 75% of
the projected revenue generation amount in the Middle Georgia special tax district are as follows:

NOW, THEREFORE, PURSUANT TO THE AUTHORITY VESTED IN ME BY VIRTUE OF
O.C.G.A48-8-244 AND O.C.G.A21-2-540, IT IS HEREBY ORDERED:
(1) That a call fora special one percent (1%) sales and use tax in the Middle
Georgia special tax district, of which Monroe County is a part, in an amount not
to exceed $637,746,847 and for a period of time not to exceed ten (10) years
duration commencing October 1, 2018 subject to the approval of the voters of
said special tax district is hereby issued.
(2) That said Special Election shall be held on May 22,2018, between the hours
of 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.; that all persons who are not registered to vote and
who desire to register to vote in the special election may register to vote through
the close of business on April 24,2018.
(3) That the question to be put before the voters of Monroe County, as part of the
middle Georgia special tax district, shall be placed on the ballot and read as
follows:
