Mary Persons’ boys soccer
team will play at Shaw High
in Columbus on Friday
for Round 1 of the state
playoffs after closing out the
regular season with a 2-1
loss to Perry.

fans and players.
The game remained knot
ted at 1-1 through much of
the second half until late in
the game Perry got behind
the defense and got a game
winner.
Despite the loss, Luton
said he was proud of the
effort and much improved
result over the first game
with Perry.
“When we show up,” said
Luton, “we can play with
anybody. Perry is a good
team. It would’ve been nice
if we could’ve pulled it out
but we played well. We cre
ated good chances, we just
didn’t have the composure
I would like to finish some
of those.”
Luton said MP’s lack of
depth may have hurt at the
end of the game.
4-1 in region. The teams
had no common opponents
this year so it’s hard to know
how it will unfold.
“They’re a good team,”
said coach Allen Luton.
“It’ll be tough.”
The boys will be trying to
avoid a repeat of last year
when the Bulldogs, as the
No. 1 seed, were stunned in
Round 1 by No. 4 seeded
Eastside in PKs.
If MP wins on Friday,
it’ll face the winner of
Richmond Academy vs.
Luella on Wednesday, May
2, meaning the Bulldogs
would most likely travel to
Augusta.
While losing on Senior
Night is a disappointment,
the Bulldogs played the
Panthers (11-4-1,8-2 re
gion) much closer than the
6-1 loss Perry handed them
earlier in the season.
The Bulldogs finished the
regular season 12-4-1,6-4
in the region to take third
place.
Against Perry, the Pan
thers got on board first, but
the Bulldogs tied it up late
in the first half for a free
kick just outside the box
on the left side. Alex Rivera
lined up for the kick but
Perry’s keeper continued
to argue the call well away
from the goal. Undeterred,
Rivera quickly drilled it
into the net and the goal
counted despite howling
and complaints from Perry
