INCIDENT REPORTS . APRIL 25, 2018
The following incidents were reported by the
Monroe County Sheriffs Office April 6-16.
Forsyth driver
charged with DUI
after admitting to
drinking five beers
A 56-year-old black
Forsyth man was arrested
and charged with DUI
after a traffic stop on
Hwy. 42 North on April
15. At about 1:20 a.m.,
Cpl. Thomas Haskins,
Deps. Tyler Rodgers and
Perry Fitzgerald and
Forsyth Police Officers
Jacquetta Newsome and
Bell were conducting a
sobriety checkpoint on
Hwy. 42 North at the
Shell gas station when
a black 2003 Chevrolet
Silverado approached.
Deputies smelled a strong
odor of alcohol coming
from the trucks male
driver and noticed his
speech was slurred and
his eyes were glossy and
red. The driver, who said
his wife was traveling in
the vehicle behind him,
had several beer cans in
a black plastic bag beside
him. When Haskins asked
the driver how many
beers he had consumed,
the driver replied, “I’m
not going to lie to you. I
had about five beers.” The
driver then pointed at his
wife’s vehicle and said he
just wanted to go home.
The driver, who said he
didn’t have his license with
him, gave deputies a fake
name and said he couldn’t
remember his birth date.
The driver said he has
cancer and forgets things
easily. Dispatchers then
determined the identity
of the vehicle’s owner, and
the driver said he was the
owner. The driver then
failed several field sobriety
tests, including the walk-
and-turn test, saying he
would “have to be in the
military or something to
walk like that.” The driver
then tested a high posi
tive for alcohol on a field
breath test, but the driver
refused to submit a blood
sample at Monroe County
Hospital. While en route
to the Monroe County
Jail, the driver said his
wife was actually driving
the truck when it stopped.
Haskins asked the driver
how his wife could have
been driving when he
was the one inside the
truck. He responded that
he jumped behind the
wheel so his wife wouldn’t
get into trouble. Once at
the jail, the driver replied
that he was “too drunk
to remember” when a jail
officer asked him for some
booking information.
About two hours after
being booked into the jail,
the driver told a jail officer
that he had actually given
deputies his brother’s
name, who is the truck’s
owner, and then revealed
his real name. Dispatchers

Man arrested after
methamphetamine
found in Jeep on
Mt. Zion Church Rd.
A 37-year-old white
Forsyth man was arrested
and charged with posses
sion of methamphetamine
after a traffic stop on
Mount Zion Church Road
on April 13. At about 8:52
p.m., Dep. Perry Fitzgerald
and Cpl. Thomas Haskins
saw a brown 2001 Jeep
Cherokee parked on a
dirt area just off of Mount
Zion Church Road.
Fitzgerald approached the
driver side door and saw
the male driver was asleep
in the front seat. Fitzgerald
then tapped on the win
dow, and the driver woke
up and frantically tried
to roll down the window.
The driver told Fitzgerald
he was trying to get some
sleep, but Fitzgerald
noticed the driver was
having trouble speaking
and didn’t appear to know
where he was. The driver
then said he didn’t have
anything illegal inside his
vehicle and allowed depu
ties to search. Deputies
then found inside the
center console a clear plas
tic bag containing meth
amphetamine. Fitzgerald
then took the driver to the
Monroe County Jail.
Deputies discover
marijuana residue
inside Yeti cup of
Roberta woman
A white 42-year-old
Roberta woman was
arrested and charged with
DUI after a traffic stop on
1-75 South on April 14. At
about 3:31 a.m., Dep. Tyler
Rodgers saw a black 2007
Chevrolet Tahoe failing
to maintain its lane and
changing lanes without
signaling while traveling
100 mph in a 70 mph zone
on 1-75 South near mile
marker 184. The female
driver, whose speech was
slurred and whose move
ments were extremely
sluggish, said she had
been in Atlanta with a
friend and was driving
home to Roberta. The
driver smelled strongly of
alcohol, but she denied
having been drinking.
The driver then failed
several field sobriety tests
and tested a high posi
tive for alcohol on a field
breath test. The driver
then admitted to having
consumed three glasses
of wine earlier that night.
Deputies then inventoried
the SUV and found a Yeti
can with a fake top in the
center console contain
ing drug related objects
and marijuana residue.
The driver said the drug
related objects were used
to smoke marijuana but
denied they belonged to
her. Rodgers then took
the driver to the Monroe
County Jail, where she was
also charged with speed
ing, failure to maintain
lane, failure to signal while
changing lanes and pos
session of drug related
objects.
Semi truck driver
charged with DUI
after failing to
maintain lane
A 62-year-old black
Deerfield Beach, Fla. man
was arrested and charged
with DUI after a traf
fic stop on 1-75 South
on April 14. At about
7:11 p.m., Cpl. Thomas
Haskins and Dep. Perry
Fitzgerald were notified by
dispatchers to be on the
lookout for an orange-cab
semi truck pulling a fully-
loaded white trailer that
was traveling recklessly
and failing to maintain
its lane on 1-75 South
near mile marker 198. A
9-1-1 caller reported the
truck, which had a Florida
license plate, was taking
up three lanes and was all
over the road. Deputies
tried to stop the truck
at mile marker 185, but
it continued traveling
another two miles before
slowing down. The male
driver said he was swerv
ing because he was talk
ing to his wife on his cell
phone. However, Haskins
noticed the driver’s speech
was slurred and he kept
repeating himself. Haskins
then asked the driver if
he had taken any medi
cation. The driver said
he takes blood pressure
medicine that started with
“Hydro.” When Haskins
asked if he was referring
to Hydrocodone, the
driver appeared to become
offended and said he
only takes blood pressure
medicine. The driver then
agreed to take several field
sobriety tests. However,
when Fitzgerald asked
the driver to take an eye
movement test, the driver
asked if it was one of the
field sobriety tests. When
Fitzgerald answered that
it was, the driver replied,
“Nah, I’m not doing that.”
The driver then changed
his mind again and took
several tests, includ
ing the eye movement
test, and failed them.
Deputies then searched
the truck and found six
prescription medications,
including Lovastatin,
Hydrochlorothiazide,
Aspirin, Allopurinol and
Hydrocodone. Haskins
also found a U-PASS urine
test, which is generally
used to alter the results
of a drug test, inside the
truck. Haskins then asked
the driver why he lied
about having a prescrip
tion for Hydrocodone.
The driver answered that
he was elderly and didn’t
understand the ques
tion. The driver then
said he had last taken his
medications that morn
ing. Haskins then took
the driver to the Monroe
County Jail, where he
refused to take a state
blood test. The driver was
also charged with failure
to maintain lane.
Culloden driver
charged with DUI
after stop at Hwy.
42 N. checkpoint
A 36-year-old black
Culloden man was
arrested and charged with
DUI after a traffic stop on
Hwy. 42 North on April
14. At about 11:57 p.m.,
Dep. Perry Fitzgerald and
Officer Bell of the Forsyth
Police Department were
conducting a sobriety
checkpoint at Hwy. 42
North at the Shell gas sta
tion when a white 1999
Chevrolet Tahoe pulled
up. Deputies smelled
alcohol coming from the
male driver and noticed
he was slurring his speech,
swaying back and forth
and had trouble keeping
his eyes open. The driver
told deputies he and his
girlfriend had just come
from El Tejado, where
he drank one beer. The
driver then failed several
field sobriety tests, and
Fitzgerald again asked the
driver about his alcohol
consumption. The driver
then changed his story and
said he had consumed two
beers and a tequila shot
before testing a high posi
tive for alcohol on a field
breath test. Fitzgerald then
took the driver to Monroe
County Hospital, where he
submitted a blood sample,
before taking him to the
Monroe County Jail.
