Fifteen teams compete in Bob Land tourney
By Diane Glidewell
news&mymcr
Forsyth United Methodist
Church held its 4th Annual Bob
Land Scholarship Golf Tourna
ment with the assistance of Boy
Scout Troop 51 on Saturday, April
14 at the Forsyth Golf Course. The
tournament raises money to award
scholarships to the church’s gradu
ating seniors. Rick Barfield said
that in 2017 it generated funds to
provide six graduates with $1,500
each.
The 2018 tournament was
blessed with pleasant spring
weather as 15 teams competed and
enjoyed playing the course.The Boy
Scouts presented the colors to start
the tournament, cooked hamburg
ers and helped with clean-up and
other aspects of the tournament.
There were fundraising raffles,
trophies for flight winners and
Barbie fishing poles for those
whose golf game suggested that
they might should take up fishing
instead.
There were several ties among
the winners, and Barfield offered
various suggestions for breaking
the ties: a putt off, a coin toss or
a wrestling match. The first tied
teams opted to flip coins. Subse
quent teams went for “rock, paper,
scissors” to decide.
Winning the top flight with a
score of 57 was the team of Dr.
Tom Perry, Dr. Deena Holliman
Smith, John Baker and Dr. Bran
don Pinson. Winning the second
flight with a score of 63 was the
team of Bob Phillips Sr., Jim Finch,
Reed Henderson and Bob Phil
lips. The Stevick and Wangerin
team took the next flight, and Ben
Gravitz took the Barbie fishing
poles.

Tournament.
Raffle winners took home prizes
like golf at the River Forest course, a
$100 gift card, $100 in golf lessons
and a Chick-Fil-A gift card.
MP boys season
ends in shutout
The Mary Persons boys soccer team
saw its season end on Friday night
with a 3-0 loss to Shaw in Columbus
despite outshooting their opponent
17-16. It was frustrating, said
coach Allen Luton. The Bulldogs fin
ished the season 12-5-1. Luton said
hes proud they still won 12 games
despite losing 10 seniors last year. It
was the final contest for another nine
Dogs seniors, including Alex Rivera
(above). It’s the second year in a row
the Bulldogs have taken a Round 1
exit in the playoffs.
Okinawan Karate School students earn Black Belts
Pictured, left to right, are Aman Boricha-Masand, Sensei Michael
Brewster, Ladondre Buckner.
Two students of Okinawan Karate
School were recently awarded their Black
Belts. Ladondre’ Buckner tested for Adult
Black Belt and Aman Boricha-Masand
tested for Junior Black Belt on Feb. 18.
Ladondre’ is a student at Mary Persons,
and Aman is a student at ACE in Macon.
Aman has been studying karate since 1st
grade, Ladondre’ since 3rd grade. Their
Black Belts are a culmination of over eight
years of hard work.
They attended weekly classes and com
pleted perseverance tasks, like 90 minutes
of jump rope, 45 minutes of stairs and
running a 2-mile killer course with hilly
terrain to name of few. They worked on a
community service project that included
building planters for a local nursing home
and persevered through countless hours
of training. Their preparation included
100 random acts of kindness and two days
of empathy training in which they spent a
day without speaking a single word and a
day with a blindfold on for 24 hours.
They did thousands of techniques in the
weeks leading up to their tests and kata
hundreds of times. Self Defense, weapons,
sparring, breaking and essays were all part
of the test; most of those who aspire to
Black Belts don’t even get to the test.
The test, not including the 48 hours of
empathy training and TEAM project, took
over 17 hours total. At OKS, you do not
get a Black Belt, you
EARN it!
“Earning my black
belt only means that
the true journey of
karate now begins,”
said Aman.”2nd
degree here I come!”
Ladondre and Man
thank their Sensei
Michael Brewster for
providing the teaching
and guidance needed
to learn realistic and
valuable martial arts at
OKS and they thank
their families for first
enrolling them in
karate.
Sensei Brewster
is very proud of
these young men.
He hopes that they
continue to train and
keep improving as
great role models for
Forsyth, OKS and
everywhere!
