ROBBERS
INCIDENT REPORTS . MAY 2, 2018
The following incidents were reported by the
Monroe County Sheriffs Office March 27-April 20.
Man dressed as
GPSTC trainee
charged after
giving fake name
A 28-year-old black
Canton man was arrested
and charged with giv
ing a false name after an
incident at the Georgia
Public Safety Training
Center (GPSTC) on April
20. At about 12:19 p.m.,
Sgt. Chad Beck met with
GPSTC security officers
Jones and Pritchett about
a male suspect who was
trespassing. Pritchett said
the suspect, who was
dressed like a probation
officer trainee, entered
GPSTC s front gate with
out stopping. Pritchett said
the suspect told officers he
was seeking employment
and had also had lunch
in the GPSTC cafeteria.
Jones said the suspect
had given him a fake
name and said it was the
second time in the past
month that the suspect
had entered the property.
Beck then met with the
suspect, who admitted to
giving Jones a fake name.
Beck then searched the
suspect’s vehicle but did
not find anything illegal.
Beck told Jones he thought
the suspect could be
dropping off illegal items
inside GPSTC for inmate
workers to smuggle into
A1 Burruss prison. Jones
said he would review
GPSTC video surveillance
of that day as well as the
suspect’s previous visit to
GPSTC on April 4 and
see if he could spot the
suspect leaving any items
behind. Jones said the
suspect had a backpack
that he brought with him
but did not find anything
illegal inside of it. Beck
determined the suspect
is currently on probation
and notified his probation
officer of his arrest.
Deputy locates
Cognac bottle on
floorboard during
1-75 North stop
A 29-year-old black
Hinesville man was
arrested and charged with
DUI (refusal habitual vio
lator) after a traffic stop
on 1-75 North on April
20. At about 5:16 a.m.,
Dep. Christian Sawley
saw a black 2007 Dodge
Magnum following too
closely behind another
vehicle and failing to
maintain its lane on 1-75
North near mile marker
184. When Sawley stopped
the vehicle, he saw the
male driver was talk
ing on his cell phone.
Hawley then asked the
driver for his license, and
the driver began dig
ging around in his center
console and glove com
partment before saying,
“Not with me.” The driver
then revealed his name
and date of birth, and
dispatchers determined
his license was revoked.
Dep. Nicholas Ortiz then
asked the driver to per
form field sobriety tests,
but the driver refused.
Deputies then inventoried
the vehicle and found an
open bottle of Hennessy
cognac, which was three-
quarters empty, located
on the floorboard behind
the driver’s seat. Hawley
then took the driver to
the Monroe County Jail,
where he was charged with
failure to maintain lane,
following too closely, driv
ing while license suspend
ed/revoked and an open
container violation.
Resident reports
finding county
signs in rear of
Burner Loop barn
At about 8:30 p.m. on
April 19, Sgt. Chad Beck
was contacted by phone
by a male McCowan
Road resident who said
he found some Monroe
County road signs in his
barn on Burner Loop.
The resident said the signs
were discovered when he
allowed a friend to remove
some tin from the barn. At
about 9 p.m., Beck went
to the barn and found
several road signs along
with a large stop sign still
attached to a wood post.
He then removed a total of
nine signs and put them in
the back of his truck. Beck
then notified Lt. Lawson
Bittick, who recently inves
tigated a possibly related
case of road sign theft, of
the discovery and turned
the signs over to Dep. Jeff
Wilson.
Dublin driver
charged with DUI
after deputy finds
pants unzipped
A 59-year-old black
Dublin man was arrested
and charged with DUI
after a traffic stop on 1-75
South on April 19. At
about 10:45 p.m., Dep.
Tyler Rodgers saw a white
2005 Ford F-150 with
a Tennessee tag travel
ing 93 mph in a 70 mph
zone on 1-75 South near
mile marker 190. Rodgers
saw the truck was follow
ing too closely behind
another vehicle and also
changed lanes several
times without signaling,
so he stopped the truck at
the 1-75 South weigh sta
tion. The male driver, who
presented a Tennessee
ID, told Rodgers that his
license was suspended.
When Rodgers ordered
the driver to get out of the
truck, he saw the driver’s
pants were unbuttoned
and unzipped, his belt was
unbuckled, and there was
a wet spot on his pants
next to his zipper. Rodgers
saw the driver’s eyes were
watery and bloodshot, his
speech was slurred, and
his breath smelled strongly
of alcohol. The driver then
admitted to drinking a few
beers at about 6 p.m. that
night and agreed to take
several field sobriety tests,
which he failed. Rodgers
then took the driver to
the Monroe County Jail,
where he was also charged
with speeding, following
too closely, failure to signal
when changing lanes and
driving while license sus
pended.
Air conditioning
units, microwaves
stolen from homes
on Presidents Way
At about 11:23 a.m.
on April 19, Dep. Jacob
Robins went to Presidents
Way about burglaries
at two new homes. A
man told Robins the two
homes were newly built
and have been for sale
for the past two months.
The man said a neighbor
was walking his dog and
found the rear door open
to one of the homes and
noticed air conditioning
units were missing at both
homes. The man said the
suspect entered each home
through a window at the
rear and stole from each
home a GE microwave,
a GE stove and a Carrier
air conditioning unit with
an interior air handler.
The stolen items were
valued at about $8,000.
The man said Three Oaks
Construction was the
contractor for the homes,
and he said he last checked
on the homes at about 9
a.m. on April 16 when all
doors and windows were
secured.
Deputies locate
meth in search of
Old Dames Ferry
Road residence
A 38-year-old white
Juliette man and a 19-year-
old white Juliette man
were each arrested and
charged with possession of
methamphetamine after a
search of their Old Dames
Ferry Road home on
March 27. At about 11:54
p.m., Dep. Perry Fitzgerald
went to the Rum Creek
gas station at the intersec
tion of Hwys. 87 and 18
to assist Jones County
Sheriff’s Inv. Adam Grant.
Grant said he stopped
a Juliette couple and
confiscated suspected
methamphetamine from
their vehicle earlier in the
night. Grant said the male
suspect informed him
he had more drugs at his
Old Dames Ferry Road
home, and Grant called
Fitzgerald to assist him
with searching the couple’s
home. The male suspect
allowed deputies to enter
his master bathroom and
retrieve the methamphet
amine. However, once
inside the bathroom, the
male suspect pointed at a
cabinet below the sink as
the location of the drugs,
but deputies could not
find any. Grant then found
a purple Crown Royal bag
and a broken glass pipe
on the floor next to the
toilet. Grant found inside
the bag two digital scales
and a plastic bag filled
with smaller plastic bags
that appeared to contain
methamphetamine resi
due. Grant then found a
small makeup bag near
the Crown Royal bag that
contained a small plastic
bag of suspected meth
amphetamine. The male
suspect told Grant that his
son knew about the meth
amphetamine, and the son
then admitted to having
broken the glass pipe and
flushed down the toilet
the drugs that were in the
Crown Royal bag. Grant
then took the male suspect
and his son to the Jones
County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputy witnesses
Atlanta driver
dumping drugs
out car window
A 42-year-old black
Atlanta man was arrested
and charged with posses
sion of marijuana after
a traffic stop on North
Fee Street on April 20.
At about 9:56 p.m., Dep.
Kemeyan Colvard saw a
blue 2013 Nissan Altima
failing to maintain its lane
on 1-75 South near mile
marker 188. Colvard fol
lowed the car down the
Exit 187 off ramp and saw
the male driver reach his
hand out the window and
dump out a jar of what
appeared to be marijuana.
Colvard then stopped the
car at the Waffle House
on North Fee Street and
smelled the odor of raw
marijuana coming from
inside the car. Cpl. John
Thompson then found
the marijuana alongside
the road, and Colvard
asked the driver about
it. The driver said he
dumped it out because
he was nervous. Colvard
also found a small, clear
plastic bag containing
marijuana inside the car.
He then took the driver to
the Monroe County Jail,
where he was also charged
with obstruction.
