Families enjoy old-fashioned fun

Forsyth held its first annual Kite
Day on Saturday, April 14 at the
city’s Country Club Park. Families
were invited to come out and try
their hand at launching kites, big
and small, store bought or home
made, into the skies over the park.
The weather cooperated with
mild temperatures and moderate
gusts of wind so that young and
older citizens checked out the old-
fashioned form of recreation on a
string.
Forsyth’s Trio Manufacturing
began making kite string in the late
1950’s and became the sole suppli
er for the Hi-Flier Manufacturing
Company, well known for
making kites in the U.S. Trio
Manufacturing continued making
kite string until 2017.
Tammie Pierson of Main Street
said that as many as 25 people at a
time were flying kites on the open
field behind the Forsyth Splash
Pad on Saturday. Council mem
ber Julian Stroud came out to the
event and told council at its April
16 meeting that he particularly
enjoyed seeing families interacting
at Kite Day, including
grandparents
teaching
grandchildren how to fly kites.
There was a couple from Atlanta
and a man from Jenkinsburg with
large kites, all avid kite flyers,
whose knowledge and picturesque
kites added interest to the day.
“It was phenomenal,” said
Stroud.
The city provided materials for
making kites, three inflatables for
children and a food vendor at the
park. Some of those attending
brought lawn chairs and blankets
and their own picnic items for
lunch and snacks.
Pierson considered the day a suc
cess and is planning for Kite Day
next year.
