SPRING SPORTS AT MONROE COUNTY MIDDLE SCHOOL . ARTICLES BY ATHLETES
MCMS baseball team won’t
settle for less than its best
By Jake Causey
Have you ever been
told no? Or that you
won’t get there? Have
you ever had a limit that
needed to be broken?
The Monroe County
Middle School baseball
team has done that.
Our very first game
was against Lamar
County, on Feb. 15. We
won that game 5-3, and
our coach still wasn’t
satisfied. The next day
our coach had a talk
with us. He said that
the coach for Lamar
County told him that it
wouldn’t matter how we
practiced, we are in the
same boat as Lamar, and
that the top four teams
(the top four get into the
playoff) are usually Gray
Station, Clifton Ridge,
Henderson, and Upson-
Lee.
On Tuesday, April 17,
we defeated Upson Lee
in the playoffs 16-0. Eric
Snow threw a no-hitter
against them. If you
include that game, our
record is now 11-2.
Thursday, April 19, we
played in the champion
ship against the win
ner of Lamar and Gray
Station. This proves that
the Lamar County coach
didn’t even have faith in
his team. They made it
to the playoffs as well.
Our team worked very
hard, pushed our limits
in practice, and fought
in the season to get here.
Never listen to anyone
who says you can’t.

This baseball season the
Monroe County boys have
been doing very good and
are still going today We
were off to a great start and
won many games before we
finally lost our first game to
Gray Station. And we may
have to play them again in
the championship.
Our record for the
season stands 11 wins and
2 losses. Our past game
was a playoff game against
Upson-Lee, and could have
possibly been our last, but
we put our minds to it and
used teamwork to work our
way through it.
In the game we didn 't
score any runs in the
first inning and it stayed
dead. Not many runs were
scoring and not many
people hit the ball. That all
changed in the second in
ning when Caden Swancey
got walked at his at-bat for
the first time that game and
the next batter (me) got up
to the plate and hit the ball.
We scored a run when
Caden ran in and stopped
the tie at 0-0; we were now
winning.
This was the spark the
team needed. We ran the
inning, racking up 12 runs
in one inning! We kept on
fighting throughout the
game and worked really
hard. We won a playoff
game against Upson-Lee.
The final score stood 16-
0, and we were headed to
the championship, which
we played Thursday, April
19 and came out with a
win.
MCMS is proud
of its track team
By Caroline Hampton
On April 14, Monroe
County Middle School’s
track team competed in the
annual Griffin-Spalding
track regional meet. There
were many teams there,
including Upson Lee, Pike,
Griffin, Peach and many
other teams.
The competition was
tough, but the girls and
boys of Monroe County
Middle school put up a
fight to win! The girls 4 x
100 team (which is mostly
8th grade girls) won first
place and is getting to run
at state this weekend.
7th grader Jillian Johnson
got first in the 800 meters,
and Campbell Brown got
first in the 100 and 200
meter races.
The girls 4x4 team put
up a fight to get first but,
with an injured player,
ended up in second place.
I, myself, ran the 1600
meters and got 5th out of
17 girls running and 6th in
the 800 meter race. Genna
Hallman, who also ran the
1600, got 7th out of 17 girls.
The winner of that race was
a girl from Pike County
(dang they were fast!). The
boys also did good at the
track meet but did not have
as many firsts as the girls
did. Yet they still did great.
In the end, Upson came
out in first (like last year),
but what really matters is
that we tried our best and
put up a fight to some of
the hardest competitors.
With this being my last
year in middle school, it
was exciting to get to run
and get to see other players
compete.
I am excited that I got to
run under two of the best
coaches in Monroe County,
Mr. and Mrs. Coach John
son. They pushed us hard
this year and it paid off in
the end! This track season
was great, and I can’t wait
till next season!
Cheerleading tryouts are
tough but worth it
By Jasmyn Porter
On the week March
19-23, Monroe County
Schools held cheer tryouts
for rising freshmen, sopho
mores, juniors, and seniors.
Other than summer work
outs, tryouts are the hardest
part of the season in the
conditioning aspect. They
allow coaches to eliminate
the people that do not have
enough initiative and drive
to become a cheerleader.
Many people do not
think of it, but Monroe
County Schools treat their
cheerleaders as normal
athletes. We condition
sometimes more than other
sports. Tryouts usually
start by running a mile.
We only run to practice for
the timed mile at the end
of the week. The less time
you take to run your mile,
the more points. Next, we
do mostly abs, and other
static exercises. Condi
tioning takes most of the
time up, but when we get
done we practice the cheer
and dance that we have to
perform at the end of the
week.
On Friday, we wait
until we are called with a
small group of people and
perform. By the end of that
day, we know what team
we made.
