Mary Gore is a DOC
Nurse of the Year
Monroe County resident Mary La Vaughn Gore was named last
month as a 2018 Nurse of the Year by the Georgia Department
of Corrections (DOC). Gore, who works for Georgia Correctional
Health Care (GCHC)/Augusta Medical College, was one of four
nurses selected for the prestigious honor along with Sabrina Grego
ry, Steven Harris and Linda Barney. For her honor, Gore, who treats
inmates at the Georgia Diagnostic & Classification Prison in Jackson,
received the Commissioners Coin and a proclamation from Georgia
Gov. Nathan Deal at a ceremony in Glennville on April 19.

The Blue Bridge Society will

be Yvette Sangster, Director for
Advocacy Education with the
Georgia Advocacy Office for
people with disabilities. She is
widely known for her tenac
ity and ability to motivate and
promote the very real concept
of recovery from mental illness.

Monroe County’s Memorial Day Observance will
begin at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 28 on the Court
House square to honor those who gave their lives
for our freedom. Lorraine Smith will be the keynote
speaker. Mary Persons JROTC will present the col
ors, and Jeff Dean will perform. Refreshments will be
served following the ceremony.

enter State 4-H Horse $how
Educational Contests. Youth

Memorial Day Weekend
High Falls Fire Station An
nual BBQ & Yard Sale
High Falls Fire Station will
have its Annual Barbecue and
Yard Sale on Memorial Day
Weekend. All proceeds support
the fire station. Donations for
the yard sale are needed.
Volunteers cook the barbecue,
which has a reputation for
being outstanding. Plates are
$9 and include Cole slaw,
baked beans, drinks and all the
trimmings with the slow cooked
meat.
