INCIDENT REPORTS . MAY 16, 2018
The following incidents were reported by the
Monroe County Sheriffs Office April 22-May 11.
Florida driver
charged with DUI
after deputy finds
Xanax tablets
A 38-year-old black
Miami, Fla. man was
arrested and charged with
DUI after a traffic stop
on 1-75 North on May
6. At about 5 p.m., Dep.
Cody Maples was noti
fied by dispatchers to be
on the lookout for a white
tractor trailer traveling
recklessly on 1-75 North.
Maples spotted the tractor
trailer near mile marker
189 and saw it was fol
lowing other vehicles too
closely and weaving back
and forth on and off the
road in the far left lane.
When Maples pulled
the truck over, the truck
struck several orange traf
fic cones and eventually
parked on top of one. The
male driver, who had red,
puffy eyes and appeared
disoriented, said he was
looking at his phone to
check the time. The driver,
who displayed slow, drawn
speech, appeared not
to know where he was,
saying he was both com
ing from and headed to
Georgia. The driver, who
was having trouble walk
ing, told Maples he had
broken his back in 2015
and had endured multiple
surgeries. The driver then
denied taking any pain
medicine but admitted
to taking Xanax at 7 a.m.
that morning for anxiety.
The driver then failed one
field sobriety test, an eye
exam, but Maples didn’t
administer any others due
to the drivers back condi
tion. Maples found two
unlabeled pill bottles, one
contained a muscle relaxer
and Xanax pills while the
other contained two dif
ferent size Oxycodone
tablets. Maples also found
in the console a piece of
cardboard with a white
powdery substance on it,
believed to be a crushed
Oxycodone pill. The driver
told Maples he had a pre
scription for the drugs but
had removed the labels so
his wife wouldn’t know he
was taking drugs. While
en route to the Monroe
County Jail, the driver
told Maples he should
give him a break because
he is black and that it was
not good for white cops
to arrest a black man. The
driver also told Maples
he didn’t want to submit
a urine sample because
he had gotten in trouble
in the past when he gave
a sample. The driver also
vowed to sue the Monroe
County Sheriff’s Office
if he died in its custody
because Maples had taken
his medication as evi
dence. The driver was also
charged with Violation of
the Georgia Controlled
Substance Act, improper
lane usage, failure to main
tain lane, following too
closely, drugs not in origi
nal container and reckless
driving.
Multiple persons
report suspicious
caller claiming to
be sheriffs deputy
At about 9 a.m. on May
9, a Forsyth man told
Cpt. Jeff Thompson that
at about 8:30 a.m. that
morning he had listened
to a message on his work
answering machine from
a male caller claiming to
be Lt. Ricky Davis of the
Monroe County Sheriff’s
Office. The man said he
returned the phone call,
and the caller told him
he had two outstanding
warrants out of Monroe
County for failure to
appear and contempt of
court, respectively. The
man said the caller told
him that in order to avoid
arrest he would need to
go to the nearest Dollar
General or CVS and buy
two money packs, each
in the amount of $505.95,
and send them to the
caller. The man said when
he asked the caller a spe
cific question to try to
determine if it was really
a deputy, the caller put
him on hold and never
returned to the line. The
man said he then notified
Thompson of the situa
tion. Thompson turned
the case over to Inv.
Ben Cook and notified
9-1-1 daytime supervisor
Tomeka Colbert that there
could be additional calls
related to the attempted
scam. In a separate but
related incident, at about
10:13 a.m. on May 9, a
Macon man told Dep.
Nicholas Ortiz he had also
received a call that day
from a male caller claim
ing to be Lt. Ricky Davis
of the Monroe County
Sheriff’s Office. The man
said the caller told him
he did not respond to a
jury summons and told
him Judge Roland issued
two warrants for his arrest
for failure to appear and
contempt of court, respec
tively. The man said the
caller then told him to go
to the store and get money
packs to pay off a total of
$1,000 in fines. The man
said the caller instructed
him to send the codes for
the money packs so he
could enter them into the
official records prior to his
May 13 court date. The
man said the caller then
told him he had to stay on
the phone with him until
he got the money packs at
which point the man hung
up and notified Ortiz of
the situation.
Deputy discovers
marijuana inside
mason jar during
stop on 1-75 South
A 20-year-old white Red
Bud, Ill. woman and a
20-year-old white Murray,
Ky. woman were each
arrested and charged with
possession of marijuana
and underage possession
of alcohol after a traf
fic stop on 1-75 South
on May 9. At about 2:38
p.m., Sgt. Kevin Williams
saw a black 2008 Nissan
Altima with dark win
dow tint traveling on 1-75
South near mile marker
188. Williams also saw
the female passenger
throw something out of
the window and smelled
the odor of marijuana
permeating throughout
the inside of the car. The
female driver admitted
to having marijuana in
the car at which point
Williams then searched
the car and found behind
the front passenger’s seat
four bottles of alcohol,
including two that were
open. He also found a chip
bag containing marijuana
inside of a mason jar. The
driver then admitted the
marijuana belonged to her,
and both the driver and
passenger were arrested
and taken to the Monroe
County Jail. The driver,
the Red Bud, Ill. woman,
was also charged with a
window tint violation.
Man discovers loan
in the amount of
$24,000 taken at
Fifth Third Bank
At about 8:38 a.m. on
May 8, a Macon man told
Dep. Nicholas Ortiz that
someone had opened in
his name a $24,000 loan
from Fifth Third Bank
as well as a Macy’s credit
card at an Orlando, Fla.
location. The man said his
wife called the post office
on May 4 to ask why their
mail had not been deliv
ered in several days. The
man said she was told that
her husband had put a
hold on the mail. The man
said his wife then looked
into her husband’s credit
history and discovered the
fraudulent charges.
Lithonia driver
charged with pot
possession, intent
to distribute
A 40-year-old black
Lithonia man was arrested
and charged with posses
sion of marijuana with
intent to distribute after a
traffic stop on 1-75 South
on May 11. At about 7:20
p.m., Officer Mitchel
Bell of the Forsyth Police
Department saw a vehicle
speeding on 1-75 South
near mile marker 186. Bell
noticed a three-year-old
child laying down in the
back seat that was not
properly restrained as
well as a three-month-old
baby in the front pas
senger’s lap with a seat
belt around it. Bell also
smelled marijuana coming
from the vehicle, and the
male driver admitted to
having marijuana in the
glove box. The driver also
admitted to having Ecstasy
pills in his pocket and a
gun under the driver’s seat.
Bell then took the driver
to the Monroe County Jail,
where he was also charged
with possession of Ecstasy
and speeding.
