8th grade Field
Day was a great
way to wrap up
middle school
Ms. Mullis Home Room rallies for the challenge of 8th grade Field Day.
By Abby Ellison
8th grade field day took
place on May 10th at
BSMS. There were many
different teams compet
ing in different games and
activities to earn points for
their class. Each team con
sisted of your homeroom
class. Each class picked a
color of the shirts that were
made for field day to repre
sent their team. In home
room, students signed up
for activities they wanted
to do. The activities took
place, some outside and
in the gym. Mrs. Monks
homeroom class took 1st
place.

On May 10th, the eighth
grade had its field day.
This field day will be one
to remember, because it
is our last. High school
is around the corner and
with that comes no more
field days. Field Day was
full of fun and energetic
activities which include;
volleyball, the fifty-meter
run, hula-hoop toss, and
many more. All the teams
brought their best, but only
one team could win. This
year, Mrs. Monks class got
first place. The entire team
received medals. Although
it was our last, we all had
an amazing time. The
memories made were really
great and were spent with
good friends.

Last Thursday, at Banks
Stephens middle school,
the 8th graders had their
field day. I was involved
in it because I am in 8th
grade and it was awesome!
We started off the day
with going to the gym and
shouting out chants for our
teams (our teams were our
homeroom classes) and
I am pretty sure my class
was the loudest team out
there! Then we got to go
outside and play outside
games. These include run
ning events, tug of war ,and
volley-softball (basically
baseball). It was so much
fun! My team did pretty
good I think in the events
and by the end of the
outside events we were in
3rd place! We went inside
for a while because dang it
was hot outside and then
we ate lunch and hung out.
After all of this, we went
back to the gym to finish of
the day with indoor sports.
These included: volleyball,
hula hoop and many other
sports. When everyone
had finished their sports, it
was time to announce who
had won Field Day 2018.
And the winner is... Mrs.
Monks class. Aw darn, my
team did not place first,
but we did get 3rd and 3rd
is not the first to lose! This
being my last field day ever,
it was so much fun!

The 8th graders of
Monroe County Middle
School had Field Day on
Thursday, May 10th. The
winners were ultimately
Mrs. Monks Homeroom
class. With Mr. McCoys in
second and Mrs. Pippins
class in third. There were
many fun events such as
a 4x1 relay, jump roping,
newcomb, hula hooping,
hula-hoop toss, etc. This
day was an opportunity for
the students to get some
well-needed exercise and
interaction between each
other. It lasted all day with
a break in between for
lunch and some relaxation
between events. Everyone
had so much fun and was
glad for this all-daybreak
these last three weeks of
school.

The 8th grade Field
Day was one of the best
events that happened this
month. We had lots of
events that entertained the
us the whole day. One of
the events that I enjoyed
the most was nucum. It’s
a game that is similar to
volleyball but instead of
hitting the ball, you would
need to catch the ball
then throw it on the other
sides. Another activity we
played was volley softball.
Volley softball is another
event that is originated
from another sport. It is
basically the same sport
as softball but instead of
having a softball bat you
would use a plastic bat and
a dodgeball. Even though
the day ended, it was one
of the best memories I will
not forget when I graduate
middle school.

On May 10th, the seniors
of the Middle School who
earned the chance partici
pated in 8th Grade Field
Day. It included events like
tug of war, volley-softball,
hula-hoops, and many oth
ers. Field Day was a great
chance for the students to
have fun and hang out with
friends. The concession
stand offered all sorts of
snacks and drinks, all for
just $1! Each year, this day
helps students relax after
Milestones. It also sends
them off with a farewell to
Middle School.
Weather Changes
By Shawn Johnson
Middle Georgia seems to have the
most bizarre weather changes. This
specific part of Georgia goes from
Spring temperatures to Summer tem
peratures in a matter of two to three
weeks. The transition is quick and goes
directly from 60 degree highs, to 90
degree highs. Even though it happens
every year, it shocks every Georgian
when you are wearing a jacket one
day, and the next you are sweat
ing, wearing shorts. The temperature
change happens annually and is how
the weather transitions to Summer.
From the 90 degree temperatures, it
only gets hotter going into Summer.
Band Banquet
By Emily Matthews
The month of May has been a very
eventful time for many students in
the Monroe County district. Specifi
cally, at the Banks Stephens Middle
School Campus. One event that I
would say stood out the most for me
is the High School Band Banquet that
occured on Monday, May 7th. The
purpose of this banquet is to congrat
ulate the students whom have put the
most effort and time into the sport of
band. Many people were recognized
and given congratulatory awards
by the head band director Mr. Eric
Thompson. Although some people
weren’t all recognized for the certain
categories, all of the students from
each grade received a participation
is a celebration
certificate and were individually con
gratulated. Many parents and friends
accompanied these amazing students
on this special occasion and shared
the gratitude with the recipients.
On another note, at the very end of
the banquet the theme of next year’s
halftime show was revealed and a
message to all the seniors that would
be leaving us and heading to college.
This was a very emotional day for ev
eryone at the banquet but was a good
send-off to our beloved seniors and
a big congratulations to the students
who survived another year of march
ing band. This has so far been my
favorite part of my school year and
I look forward to doing it again as a
highschooler next year.
MCMS Rising Stars enjoy shining
Pictured are some of the Monroe County Middle School 7th graders recognized as Rising
Stars on May 11.

Last Friday, May 11 was
our school’s Rising Star
program. This program is
for the children at Monroe
County Middle School
that received all As for the
whole school year without
a referral.
During the program of
Rising Star the students,
including myself, got there
and ate lunch at the Tiff
college cafeteria. Then we
went to Roberts Chapel
where the ceremony was
held and ran through the
practice. The ceremony
started soon after; they
started off with naming
most of the sponsors that
make this event possible.
The students received cer
tificates for their hard work
in academics and many of
the 8th graders, including
me, received plaques with
their certificates in it for
having all As for the three
years they were in middle
school.

For the month of May I
recently had the opportu
nity to participate in the
Rising Star Ceremony in
the Roberts Chapel at Tiff
College. Rising Star is a
ceremony given to all the
children who have main
tained an all A average this
2017-18 school year. This
is the first time I was able
to participate in this event
despite having good grades
each passing year. Since it
is an awards ceremony, we
were provided with lunch
and gifts for our achieve
ments. I believe my favorite
part of the ceremony was
the awards, because even
though it was my first
time earning Rising Star, I
still was presented with a
certificate of achievement
and a 2018 collectors coin
set. My memory of this
day with stay with me for
a long time because of my
determination to achieve
better grades my last year
of middle school, and
though it is not given to
high schoolers, I will still
strive towards all As as I
continue my education at
Mary Persons High School.

On May 11 students
who maintained an all A
average for the entire year
were presented with the
Rising Star Award. The
event was sponsored by
Oglethorpe Power as well
as the Forsyth-Monroe
County Chamber of Com
merce. These students were
presented with awards, and
some eighth grade students
were presented with the
Top Scholar Award. These
students maintained an all
A average for all three years
of middle school, and they
received a plaque in honor
of their achievement. These
students also received a
2018 coin set in addition to
their awards.
Class of2022 says
‘farewell’ to Middle School
By Meghan Bennett
On May 9th, the eighth graders of Monroe County
Middle School gathered to celebrate the ending of
their last year in middle school. They danced to their
favorite songs, ate the goodies that were provided,
and enjoyed freetime on their technology. There were
several students that were brave enough to jump inside
the dance circles while their peers cheered them on.
It really is a date to remember in the future, "our last
middle school dance". There were certainly a number
of posts on social media looking back to the fun expe
riences that were held that day.
By James Story
Last week on Wednesday we had our 8th grade
dance. We had lots of food and other snacks to eat
there. The school had a DJ come and play all his music
for the whole 8th grade. You were only allowed to go if
you did not get written up in the month before. There
were lots of people there dancing and having fun. A
few times everyone crowded into circles around people
that were dancing in front of everyone. Everyone had
fun, and it was a great day.
By Megan McLeod
On May 9th our school had our annual 8th Grade
Dance in our cafeteria, and it was so much fun. This
dance was like a goodbye party for the 8th grade
students, but if you were written up or had any refer
rals from April to May 9th you couldn’t attend the
dance. The school had set aside about an hour and
forty-five minutes for us to party. Most of the teachers
were stationed at the snack bar while other teachers
had to monitor the students in the cafeteria, who were
dancing. At the snack bar, there were all kinds of food
for students to choose from. There was also cake that
had our graduating year of high school, 2022, on it.
Students were also taking pictures to remember their
8th Grade Dance. It was so much fun to just hang out
with my friends and have a good time.
