PASTOR S CORNER by Rev. Marilyn Tucker-Marek
May Christ guide 2018 graduates as they step across the stage into adulthood
T he time has
come. Soon Mary
Persons students,
and their families
and friends, will be gather
ing together for the biggest
spring event the high
school football stadium
sees: graduation.
To the 2018 graduates of
Mary Persons High School
I say congratulations!
You have worked hard,
remained diligent, and fin
ished the race. You, your
family and your friends
have much of which to be
proud.
In our culture high
school graduation remains
an important rite of pas
sage. By the end of the
academic year most high
school seniors have turned
18, or they will do so very
soon. 18 has long been
considered the
age of majority in
our country. It is
the age at which
one can register
to vote, in the
state of Georgia
an 18-year-old
can sign contracts
on one’s own, and
so it is the age at
which one can get
a job, sign a lease,
get insurance, and
buy a car all with
out the aid or permission
of a parent or guardian.
So even if you aren’t
moving out of your family
home yet, even if your
post-graduation plans
include more school,
your high school gradu
ation, cultur
ally, signifies your
movement from
childhood to
adulthood.
Now is the
time when you
will begin, if you
have not already
done so, to decide
which of the
habits, teach
ings, routines
and beliefs you
learned growing
up you will live as an adult
yourself. You will begin to
decide how you will priori
tize how you spend your
time, your money, your
focus and effort. In short,
you are entering the phase
of life when everyone
agrees you are responsible
for you.
That responsibility brings
great freedom. You have
finished one race, high
school, but you are con
tinuing another race, the
race of life. And although
you are now fully account
able for yourself according
to our nation and states’
laws and culture, you are
not alone.
As the apostle Paul
wrote, “Therefore, since we
are surrounded by so great
a cloud of witnesses, let us
also lay aside every weight
and the sin that clings so
closely, and let us run with
perseverance the race that
is set before us, looking
to Jesus the pioneer and
perfecter of our faith,
who for the sake of the joy
that was set before him
endured the cross, disre
garding its shame, and has
taken his seat at the right
hand of the throne of God.”
(Hebrews 12:1-2)
I pray that as you con
tinue the race set before
you, you will feel the pres
ence of the cloud of wit
nesses, both the saints who
have gone before us and
the people who run with
you, day in and day out,
supporting and upholding
you. I hope God blesses
you with perseverance,
so that you may have the
strength, focus, endurance
and ability to complete
with diligence and grace
whatever your next steps
in life may be. And I pray
that the example of Christ,
whose love exceeded all
human comprehension,
may guide you wherever
the race set before you
may go.
