The following incidents were reported by the
Monroe County Sheriffs Office June 1-4.
Indian Falls Drive
feud leads to
neighbor's arrest
for choking man
A 54-year-old white For
syth man was arrested and
charged with aggravated
assault after he allegedly
attacked two Indian Falls
Drive residents on June
3. At about 1 p.m., a male
Indian Falls Drive resident
told Dep. Cody Maples that
his male neighbor partially
blocked his driveway with a
homemade wooden trailer.
While Maples was meet
ing with the resident, the
male neighbor and his wife
began recording the con
versation on a cell phone.
The neighbor was carrying
a large walking stick, about
five feet long and three
inches in diameter. The
resident’s son then asked
Maples if he and his father
could move the trailer back
to the neighbors property
to clear their driveway.
When Maples said they
could, the neighbor and his
son rolled the trailer onto
the neighbors driveway.
The neighbor and his wife
then yelled and screamed
about not allowing the resi
dent or his son onto their
property. When the resi
dent and his son advanced
onto the neighbors prop
erty, the neighbor rushed at
the resident and hit him on
his back with his walking
stick. The resident’s son
then dropped the trailer
and ran toward the neigh
bor, hitting him once in the
face with a closed fist. The
neighbor then dropped the
stick and put both hands
around the resident’s son’s
throat and began to choke
him. Maples then tackled
the neighbor, hitting him
twice atop his head in an
attempt to handcuff him.
Dep. Nicholas Ortiz then
arrived and helped get
the neighbor into Maples’
patrol car. Monroe County
EMTs then took the resi
dent to the hospital while
the neighbor was taken to
the Monroe County Jail.
Driver arrested
for DUI after
wrecking truck on
Blue Store Road
A 21-year-old white
Athens man was arrested
and charged with DUI after
a one-vehicle wreck on
Blue Store Road on June
1. At about 11:49 p.m.,
Sgt. Willie Brown went
to a one-vehicle wreck
on Blue Store Road. The
male driver of a black 2008
Toyota Avalon owned by
Trammell Pest Control said
he was traveling on Blue
Store Road when a deer
exited the woods in front of
his car, causing him to lose
control and wreck. Brown
smelled a strong odor of
alcohol coming from the
driver, who admitted to
having drunk a glass of
wine earlier. When Brown
asked the driver to submit
to field sobriety tests, the
driver said he had to ask his
girlfriend, an attorney. The
driver then phoned his girl
friend, who instructed him
not to take any tests. Brown
then took the driver to the
Monroe County Jail, where
he also refused a state
breath test. The driver was
also charged with failure to
maintain lane.
Drunk woman
arrested after
laying down on
High Falls Road
A 55-year-old white For
syth woman was arrested
and charged with public
drunkenness after she was
spotted laying down on
High Falls Road on June 3.
At about 1 a.m. on June 3,
Dep. Perry Fitzgerald went
to High Falls Road near
High Falls First Baptist
Church about an intoxicat
ed woman who had nearly
been struck by several
emergency callers laying
in the road. The woman’s
son told Fitzgerald that his
mother called him while
she was walking on High
Falls Road, saying she was
drunk. He said his mother
told him she needed a ride
back to her car at the Back-
woods Bar and Grill. The
son said when he arrived
he found his mother laying
in the middle of the road
in front of High Falls First
Baptist Church. Fitzgerald
then met with the woman,
who was seated in the front
passenger seat of her son’s
van. Fitzgerald asked the
woman why she was in the
middle of the road. The
woman replied that she
was “just f- peachy’
and said she could lay in
the road as much as she
wanted. Fitzgerald then
asked the woman to let her
son take her home, but she
said she intended to leave
her home and head back to
the bar. Then, Fitzgerald ar
rested the woman and took
her to the Monroe County
Jail.
Warner Robins
man arrested
after high-speed
motorcycle chase
A 27-year-old white
Warner Robins man was
arrested and charged with
fleeing/attempting to elude
after a high-speed chase
at speeds in excess of 150
mph on 1-75 South on June
4. At about 8:13 p.m., Dep.
Christian Sawley saw a
black 2012 Yamaha YZFR1
motorcycle traveling 120
mph on 1-75 South near
mile marker 186. The mo
torcycle failed to stop and
instead continued on 1-75
South at speeds exceeding
150 mph while changing
lanes rapidly. Sawley chased
the motorcycle, which
finally stopped near mile
marker 184 when black
smoke began to rise from
the motorcycle’s tailpipe.
Sawley grabbed the male
driver by his left wrist and
ordered him to get off the
bike. The driver asked Saw
ley to let him see if he could
fix the bike before trying
to turn it back on. Sawley
again ordered the driver
to get off the bike, and he
did as instructed. How
ever, when Sawley tried
to handcuff the driver, he
pulled away and again tried
to turn on his motorcycle
with his right hand. Sawley
then grabbed the driver’s
right arm and handcuffed
him. Sawley then noticed
liquid coming from the
side of the motorcycle’s
engine as if it was broken.
The driver was then taken
to the Monroe County Jail,
where he was also charged
with obstruction, reckless
driving, speeding, failure
to use a turn signal and
wearing headphones while
operating a motor vehicle.
Wife discovers
Edwards Road
man deceased in
apparent suicide
At about 8 a.m. on June
1, Dep. Cody Maples
went to an Edwards Road
home about a suicide. A
woman said she arrived at
her husband’s home and
found him dead in the
bathroom. The woman told
Maples she had not lived in
the home since February
because they had split up.
Maples then entered the
home and found the hus
band in the bathroom with
a rope around his neck.
Maples saw the husband
was not breathing and his
skin had turned purple.
The case was then turned
over to Inv. Sam Leggett.
Milner driver
charged with DUI
after marijuana
found in truck
A 26-year-old white
Milner man was arrested
and charged with DUI after
a traffic stop on 1-75 South
on June 1. At about 11:24
a.m„ Dep. Jacob Robins
was notified by dispatchers
to be on the lookout for a
white box truck without a
tag traveling on the wrong
side of the road on John-
stonville Road. Robins then
spotted the truck exiting
1-75 South at the weigh
station, where he pulled it
over. The male driver got
out of the truck and walked
toward Robins’ patrol car
while two female passen
gers remained inside the
truck. The driver, whose
eyes were bloodshot, ap
peared intoxicated and
stumbled as he walked. The
driver said he was coming
from Barnesville, where
he had picked up one of
the passengers after her
car broke down. Robins
smelled a strong odor of
marijuana coming from
the truck, but both pas
sengers denied knowledge
of any drugs. The driver
also denied having drugs
but said his company swaps
out drivers and said one
of the other drivers could
have left something inside
the truck. The driver also
denied drinking, saying he
was on the job. The driver
then failed several field
sobriety tests but passed a
field breath test for alcohol.
Deputies then searched the
truck and found a fresh
marijuana cigarette under
the driver’s seat that was
taken into evidence. The
passengers then told Rob
ins the driver had taken
methadone and possibly
another drug. One of the
passengers then said the
driver had picked her up
at the New Forsyth Inn in
stead of in Barnesville like
he told deputies. The driver
was then taken to the
Monroe County Jail, where
he was also charged with
failure to maintain lane and
possession of marijuana.
