Tolbert endorses
Bechtel for House

Georgia House District
141 candidate Gary Bechtel
received endorsements
from three Monroe County
politicians on Thursday,
May 31.
Todd Tolbert, who was
defeated in the four-man
Republican House District
141 primary on May 22,
pledged his support for
Bechtel in a Facebook Live
video filmed outside the
Monroe County Court
house on May 31. Joining
Tolbert in showing support
for Bechtel were two Mon
roe County commissioners,
John Ambrose and George
Emami.
Bechtel, a Macon real
estate agent who served on
the Bibb County school
board and Bibb County
commission, will face Ma
con real estate broker Dale
Washburn, a former Jones
County commissioner,
in the July 24 Republican
primary run-off.
Tolbert said he has
known Bechtel for more
than 20 years and at one
point advised Bechtel not
to run for Bibb County
school board. Tolbert
joked that Bechtel ignored
his advice and the move
ultimately started his
political career. Tolbert
said campaigning against
his longtime friend was
comparable to “playing golf
with a good friend,” and
said if elected Bechtel has
vowed to listen to Tolbert
and his other constituents.
Ambrose, who previously
supported Tolbert, said
he pledged his endorse
ment for Bechtel because
of the candidates support
of the second amendment.
Emami, who also previous
ly supported Tolbert, said
he knows Bechtel well from
the real estate business and
said Bechtels experience in
government and connec
tions he’s made will prove
critical.
Bechtel thanked Ambrose
and Emami for their sup
port, saying he’s fortunate
to have two county com
missioners behind him
who fight the same daily
battles Bechtel fought in
Bibb County.
Bechtel said, “The scenery
maybe a little different, but
the challenges of represent
ing county government are
the same all over the state.”
Bechtel was accompa
nied by his wife Laura in
the May 31 Facebook Live
video, which was filmed by
Tolbert’s son Connor.
Monroe deputies pray with suicidal man
By Richard Dumas
forsyth@mymcr.net
Four Monroe County
deputies may have helped
save a life at High Falls
State Park on May 23 when
they prayed with a Milled-
geville man who had earlier
urged a deputy to shoot
him.
According to the inci
dent report, at about 5:15
p.m. on May 23, Cpt. Jeff
Thompson of the Monroe
County Sheriff’s Office was
patrolling on Little Towa-
liga Road when a female
High Falls State Park camp
ground visitor reported
that a dark-colored Honda
Accord had pulled into the
campground about five
minutes earlier. The visitor
said she was concerned
because the car’s driver, a
Milledgeville man, ap
peared to be upset and had
a blank look on his face as
he drove in.
Thompson then drove
into the campground and
found the car backed into a
parking space. He then ap
proached the car’s passen
ger side and saw the driver,
who had his eyes closed,
reclined in the driver’s
seat in a prone position.
Thompson also noticed
the driver appeared to be
crying. When Thompson
asked the driver if he was
okay, the driver first didn’t
respond so Thompson
urged the driver four times
to turn off his car ignition,
which he eventually did.
Thompson again asked
the driver if he was okay,
and without speaking the
driver raised his right hand
and motioned for Thomp
son to come closer. At that
point, Thompson called for
backup to respond quickly
to the scene. Thompson
then moved to the driver’s
side of the car about two
feet away from the driver
at which point the driver
made eye contact with
Thompson and said, “I
want you to take that gun
you are wearing and shoot
me. I want you to kill me.
I want to die.” Thompson
told the driver he was there
to help him and not to hurt
him and notified dispatch
ers of a mental health situa
tion. Thompson then asked
the driver if he intended
to harm him or anyone
else, and the driver replied,
“No I just want the pain to
end and you can do it for
me now.” The driver told
Thompson there were no
weapons inside the car and
gave Thompson permission
to search his car.
Thompson then ordered
the driver to exit the car
and asked him to tell him
what was troubling him.
The driver didn’t reveal
anything to Thompson,
and Monroe County depu
ties, Cpl. Jake Justice and
Sgts. Jarred Duncan and
Willie Brown, arrived at the
scene along with Monroe
County EMTs. EMTs then
evaluated the driver and
determined there was no
medical reason to take the
driver to an emergency
room. EMTs said the driver
told them he did not really
want to die and regretted
asking Thompson to shoot
him.
EMTs then asked Thomp
son to decide whether the
driver needed a mental
evaluation, so Thompson
asked Justice to meet with
the driver. Justice spent
15 to 20 minutes talking
to the driver, convincing
him to tell him some of
the reasons why he was so
distraught. The driver then
assured Justice that he was
no longer suicidal. Thomp
son then asked the driver
if the deputies could pray
with him about his issues,
which the driver thanked
him for suggesting. Brown
then led the group in a
prayer, and the driver was
released from the scene.
