Drivers keep stopping to
ask a Hwy. 41 man what gi
ant edifice he’s building just
north of Bolingbroke, and
now Bill Bonbrake is ready
to tell Monroe County the
answer.
Bonbrake and the lady
he calls his “wife
like person”, Annette
Barnette, are building
their 7,000-square-foot
dream home and shop
next to Bonbrake’s
existing home just
north of the intersec
tion of Hwy. 41 and
1-475. Bonbrake said he
first built a small model
of their dream home,
using a 1 inch to 1 foot
scale, and they origi
nally planned to build
the dream home on
Lake Tobesofkee. But
then, said Bonbrake,
he decided to build the
home on Hwy. 41 to see
if they liked it first. But
after several months of
construction, Bonbrake
said he’s decided the
Hwy. 41 version will be
the final one.
“I’m not building an
other home,” sighed the
76-year-old Bonbrake.
Yes, building a
7,000-square-foot dream
home can be exhausting,
but the work has impressed
a lot of visitors. The home
has 11 support columns
each holding 5,000 pounds,
plus trapezoid windows
that are the same angle as
the front of the home.
It’s so big people keep
stopping to ask if he’s build
ing a church or a barn.
But Bonbrake explains
that the front half of the
home will be the living
area, while the back of the
home will be a shop for his
vehicles and collectibles ac
cumulated over a lifetime.
In designing the home,
Bonbrake said he and
Barnette combined the
things they like, she want
ing a wide open house
plan and he wanting room
for his antique cars and
unique items. Wide open
house plan might be an
understatement. The main
living area has a 28-foot tall
ceiling — yes you read it
correctly — and the master
bedroom has his and her
closets and bathrooms.
The entire home is made
of wooden beams and
there’s not one piece of
Sheetrock in the entire
structure, said Bonbrake.
Despite all the space in
the new shop area, Bon
brake said after 76 years
collecting items he’s not
sure he’ll have room for
everything.
“We’re wondering if we
can get everything in it,”
said Bonbrake.
Thus, Bonbrake said
when they finish the home

Bonbrake. “I’d rather be
traveling and playing with
