PASTOR S CORNER by Rev. Brian Moore
The measure of spiritual
success is obedience
REV. BRIAN
MOORE
W hat constitutes a successful
Christian life? It couldn’t be
how many people a person has
led to faith in the Lord Jesus
Christ. If that were so, the prophet Jeremiah of
the Old Testament failed miserably. It couldn’t
be by how much money one has given to
charitable causes. If that were so, the widow
of Mark 12 was applauded inappropriately. It
also couldn’t be by how much service one has
participated in. If that were so, Zebedee’s sons
of Matthew 20 would have been awarded the
seats that their mother pleaded with Jesus for.
The true measure of success in the
Christian life is obedience. Have you
been faithful to what God has called
and equipped you for? Have you
obeyed God’s commandments? John
14:15 says, “Ifyou love Me, keep My
commandments” 2 Timothy 4:7 says,
“I have fought the good fight, I have
finished the race, I have kept the faith”
If you want to know how important
it is to God for His children to walk
in faithfulness and obedience to His
commands, just look at the example
of Moses. After many miracles and
many years of leading God’s people out of
captivity, Moses forfeited his right to enter
the promise land because of disobedience
to a simple command. Numbers 20:8-12 -
“8 “Take the rod; you and your brother Aaron
gather the congregation together. Speak to
the rock before their eyes, and it will yield its
water; thus you shall bring water for them out
of the rock, and give drink to the congrega
tion and their animals” 9 So Moses took the
rod from before the Lord as He commanded
him. 10 And Moses and Aaron gathered the
assembly together before the rock; and he said
to them, “Hear now, you rebels! Must we bring
water for you out of this rock?” 11 Then Moses
lifted his hand and struck the rock twice with
his rod; and water came out abundantly, and
the congregation and their animals drank.
12 Then the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron,
“Becauseyou did not believe Me, to hallow Me
in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore you
shall not bring this assembly into the land which
I have given them!"’ Moses struck the rock
when God had commanded him to merely
speak to it.
One might be tempted to think that is a little
harsh. Why would God punish such a small
act with such a large consequence? It’s because
God takes his commands seriously and
expects us to do the same. God has called us
out of a life of disobedience and slavery to sin
into a life of holiness and slavery to righteous
ness (Romans 6:18). We are saved completely
through the atoning work of Jesus Christ on
the Cross of Calvary. It is through His death,
burial, and resurrection that we have been
redeemed. The penalty of sin, which is death,
has been paid for by Jesus’ death on the cross.
Eternal life has been granted to those who sur
render to Him as Savior and Lord through His
resurrection (Romans 10:9). We are not saved
by works of righteousness, but we are
saved to do works of righteousness.
James 2:18 says, “But someone
will say, “You have faith, and I have
works!’Show me your faith with
out your works, and I will show you
my faith by my works!’ Our obedience
to God’s commands and our faithful
ness to His calling upon our lives is
what gives evidence to our relation
ship with Christ. We live in a culture
that is discarding the commands of
Scripture as though they have no
value today. Isaiah 40:8 says, “The
grass withers, the flower fades,
But the word of our God stands forever.” Obe
dience and faithfulness to the commands of
the Bible are just as much a measure of spiri
tual success today as they were the day they
were written. God wants nothing more than
to be glorified by His children. He has given us
an instruction manual on how to best glorify
Him. We are called to walk in obedience to
the Word of God and glorify God with our
lives. That is success in the Christian life. We
will stumble and we will fall. But we should
continually strive to get back up and faithfully
follow His commands.
Psalm 119:105-107- “105 Your word is a
lamp to my feet and a light to my path. 1061
have sworn and confirmed that I will keep Your
righteous judgments. 1071 am afflicted very
much; Revive me, O Lord, according to Your
word!’
