SUMMER Health Matters 2018
The Monroe County Reporter • June 27, 2018
Continued from 2C
herself out of it, making
it clear to herself that she
was going to fight—and
fight hard.
“I was scared of the
unknown. I cried--a lot. I
felt blindsided by the di
agnosis because I have al
ways otherwise been very
healthy. I eat a healthy
diet, exercise often and
I try to take care of my
body. With each new test
and procedure, the ter
rifying unknown turned
into a tangible diagnosis
and prognosis,” Pitman
said. “My diagnosis has
taught me that it is okay
to rest and it is okay to let
people help you. I am one
of the lucky ones, because
I caught the cancer early.
Some people aren’t so
lucky.”
Cancer patients and
cancer survivors have
taught Pitman to be brave
and courageous, and she
quickly learned that men
tal attitude and outlook
can truly affect physi
cal outcomes--which is
why it was necessary for
her to stay headstrong
throughout her journey.
“If I can give any advice,
it is not to neglect your
annual mammogram,
and to take primary
healthcare seriously. I
didn’t think that it could
happen to me, but cancer
does not discriminate,”
Pitman said. “I realized
how fragile life is and
how important it is to
have a strong support
system to lean on in dif
ficult times like this.”
Pitman plans to contin
ue living her life the way
she wants—and she’s not
going to let cancer stand
in her way of that.
