Farewell, Dan Pitts
By Will Davis
publisher@mymcr.net
Legendary Mary Persons
football coach Dan Pitts will be
laid to rest next to his late wife
on Friday at Forsyth City Cem
etery, within shouting distance
of the practice field where he
shaped and molded generations
of Monroe County boys into
men.
Pitts died at home early Tues
day morning at the age of 88.
His daughter Carolann Evans
said Pitts had been diagnosed
with stage 4 lung cancer in No
vember. He only smoked about
four years and quit in 1964, said
Evans. After two treatments, he
asked how much time the treat
ment would buy him. When
he was told about 3 months, he
opted to forego any more treat
ment, said Evans.
Pitts had retired in 1997
after coaching the Bulldogs for
39 years, from 1959 to 1997,
compiling a record of 346-
109-4. Pitts led the Bulldogs to
15 region titles and their only
state championship in 1980. He
was inducted into the Geor-
See PITTS. Page B4

Female jailer
hospitalized
after inmate
assaults her
By Steve Reece

A female jailer was
hurt but was able to
fight off a Monroe
County Jail inmate and
with another female
jailer put him back
into his cell during an
outburst on Monday
morning.
Monroe County jailer
Hannah Hile had to go
the emergency room
at Monroe County
Hospital on Monday
morning after a fight
with inmate Kendrick
Dumas.
Hile was checking
inmates around 7:45
a.m. on Monday, April
19 while female jailer
Ariel Morgan and a
male trustee/inmate
passed out breakfast
trays to inmates on
lockdown. Here’s what
happened, according to Hiles report: while
assisting an inmate, Hile heard loud noises
coming from inside the block, and looked
up to see inmate Kendrick Dumas at the
top of the stairs on the top tier of the block
yelling and tensing his body up. Upon enter
ing the block, Hile realized that Dumas had
barricaded himself at the top of the stairs.
The male trustee said Dumas pushed him
down the stairs.
Hile asked Dumas to return to his cell, but
instead Dumas immediately shoved her.
Hile then pushed Dumas up the stairs and
back towards his cell. While trying to re
strain the inmate, Hile reached for her radio
and Dumas grabbed her throat and began
to squeeze; making her choke and unable to
communicate.
Hile was eventually able to break herself
away from the choke hold and got Dumas
closer to his holding cell. While adjusting
her grip on the inmate, Dumas struck Hile
with a closed fist to the left side of her head,
causing her head to be smashed into the
concrete wall. Hile and Morgan were able to
restrain Dumas and secure him in his hold
ing cell and Hile was immediately admitted
to the Monroe County Hospital. Sheriff
Brad Freeman said Hile suffered a mild
concussion and plans to return to work on
Friday. “They showed great resolve in doing
what they had to do to get him subdued,”
Freeman said of his female jailers. He said
Dumas has been a constant trouble maker
who spit in a deputy’s face two weeks ago.

Elderly pair in ICU after Hwy. 74 wreck
An elderly Monroe County couple is in ICU at
Navicent for a broken back and broken neck after
a harrowing head-on collision on Hwy. 74 at the
Monroe-Bibb county line on Monday morning.
Tucker Haught, 77, of Russellville and his girlfriend
Grace Daniel, 83, were going east on Hwy. 74 on
their way to physical therapy in Macon when Gabe
Gleaton of Dublin turned his Chevy Silverado, com
ing from the other direchon, in front of them into
the County Line Store, according to deputy Todd
Haskins. After a violent collision the couple’s Honda
CRV landed on its side. Macon-Bibb and Monroe
County firefighters took about half an hour using
Jaws of Life to extricate the couple and they were
rushed to the hospital. Sources say Haught suffered
a broken neck and punctured lung and that Daniel
suffered a broken back. Gleaton, 20, who was hauling
a load of tires, was not injured. Haskins cited Gleaton
for improper turn after a witness told him that’s what
happened. Allison Jenkins of Russellville said the
couple are sweet neighbors and friends in Russellville.
She said they hope and pray they will be OK.
