Taco Bell employees called police after spotting a snake inside the store on North Lee Street around 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 28. According to the report, officer Jeremy Malone checked the restaurant and found a one-foot-long rattlesnake coiled beneath the drive-thru register. He pulled it out with his expandable metal baton and stomped it until it was dead. He then picked it up with a napkin and threw it in the outside trashcan. A spokeswoman for the Georgia Texas Management Co. that owns the local Taco Bell said she looked at the store video and doesn’t think it’s a rattlesnake. But Malone’s report says otherwise. The former University of Georgia and University of Miami head football coach was the headliner at the Neighborhood Cooperative Ministries’ 2021 celebration, speaking to hundreds of attendees that had a goal to serve others in need about his life and his faith. He didn’t expect someone he’d helped in the biggest way possible to make an appearance. Tra Battle, a Forsyth native and one of Richt’s former players at Georgia, told his story about a night he will never forget. He had retired from football and returned to UGA to finish his degree, but felt like his life had no direction. He drove to a bridge near Athens, but right before he was about to jump, something told him to call Richt, See BATTLE Page 6A Report: Byrd arrested after failing to fly out window Sheriff: He was a strange Byrd' By Steve Reece stevereece©gmail.com A Florida man was caught burglarizing a Juliette home, held at gun point and then jumped out a second-story window to flee before finally being captured on Thursday, Oct. 7, according to the Monroe County sheriff’s office. Michael Scarbary of 85 E. Rivermist Court, Juliette, got a call from his neighbor around 1 p.m. on Thursday that a strange man was in his home. Scarbary happened to be nearby, returned home, found the man in his home and pointed his gun at him. The suspect then went to a back window of the home, jumped out and ran. Monroe County deputy John Cochran arrived shortly thereafter and Scarbary thought the man was still inside. Cochran told Scarbary to cover the front door while he went around to the rear of the house. There, Cochran saw foot prints in the mud made from the impact of the suspect jumping from the second story of the house. While checking the home, they found the cell phone and jacket of Orinthius Kamasea Byrd, 22, of Ormond Beach, Fla., on the floor. Byrd also left behind a 2021 Toyota Camry parked at the top of the driveway While speak ing with Scar bary, Cochran heard his next- door neighbor shouting at Byrd to get on the ground. Cochran ran over and the neighbor said he saw the suspect running into the woods north of the homes. Deputies continued searching the area and another resident reported they saw him running south on the railroad tracks. Soon after, Byrd re turned to the area and deputies saw him running across the road from the Scarbary home and Cpt. Jarred Duncan and deputy Jacob Robins took him into custody without inci dent.
