The farmer ordered a black coffee and said he was surprised when, given Starbucks expen sive reputation, it only cost him about $2.60. “Tastes like coffee, said the farmer. He said the Starbucks staff was friendly to their tractor-driving customer. “I like your ride, one barista told the farmer, who was driving his 1966 Ford 5000 with its 50 horsepower motor. The Forsyth Starbucks opened last Thursday, Oct. 14 but it closes daily at 4 p.m. (Photo/Will Davis) Plant Scherer downsizing to continue By Will Davis publ isher™ mymcmet Monroe County’s biggest taxpayer Plant Scherer could be downsized to just two of its four units by 2028, according to new filings by Georgia Power. The power companies that own Plant Scherer filed notice with the Georgia Envi ronmental Protection Division (EPD) that they do plan to keep operating Units 1 and 2 at Plant Scherer under the Voluntary Incen tive Program (VIP). The VIP calls for more stringent limits and environmental controls which must be in place by Dec. 31,2028. However, Georgia Power is recommending Plant Scherer Unit 3 be retired. Georgia Pow er spokesman John Kraft said the company will finalize plans and dates around the Unit 3 retirement in its 2022 Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) that’s due with the Public Service Commission (PSC) in late January 2022. The PSC will make the final decision on the proposed Unit 3 retirement. Unit 4 of Plant Scherer is owned by Florida Power & Light and the Jacksonville Electric Authority. Those entities had already announced they would close Unit 4 by 2022. Georgia Power, which operates Plant Scherer, began operation of the facility’s first unit in 1982, in Juliette.
