U.S. senate candidate and
former UGA great Herschel
Walker told a crowd of
Monroe and Bibb county
supporters at a Bolingbroke
home last Thursday that he
asked God to send someone
else to run for senate.
Walker said a lot of people
think his friend former
President Trump asked him
to run. But Walker said he
was waiting to hear from a
higher authority. He quipped
that his pastor and friend,
Dr. Tony Evans of Dallas,
pointed out that they had
been asking God for a while
to send someone else, and
no one was coming forward.
“Herschel, He’s not calling
anyone else,” Evans finally
told Walker, “He’s calling
»
you.
Walker spoke for about 20
minutes and took questions
from a crowd of about 50 at
the Rivoli Drive home of Bill
and Trudie Fickling. Walker
harkened back to playing in
the 1981 Sugar Bowl against
Notre Dame when his shoul
der became dislocated. Doc
tors popped it back in and he
finished the game despite the
pain and led the Bulldogs to
their last national title.
Walker said in a similar
way he feels the country is
dislocated, with Americans
very divided and people try
ing to separate the country
into factions.
“What’s going on in this
country is a shame,” said
Walker.
Walker said he’s lived the
American dream, rising
to stardom and financial
success despite being black
and coming from the sleepy
town of Wrightsville.
“I tell people if they only
have a year to live, move to
Wrightsville,” Walker joked
of how slowly time moves
there.
Walker noted he’s played
in the NFL, on an Olympic
team, and led businesses,
yet certain segments keep
saying how bad America is.
Walker said some people are
trying to distract Americans
with divisive issues so they
won’t pay attention to what
President Biden is doing by
canceling pipelines and other
anti-American actions.
Walker said America
must also get back to a work
ethic and quit paying people
not to work. He recalled
watching his own mother
work at a clothing factory
in Wrightsville to feed her
family.
“I learned that if you don’t
work, you don’t eat,” said
Walker.
Walker said Americans
must also be taught that we
are a great country, not a
racist country like some as
sert. And he said Americans
must stand up to the idea we
should de-fund the police.
“That is a dumb idea,”
Walker said. “I’m not a
politician but that is a stupid
idea. We need the police. We
need law and order. If we
don’t have law and order, we
don’t really have a country.
And the same thing if you
don’t have a border. We gotta
have borders and we have to
protect our borders.”
Walker assailed another
dumb idea from the Biden
administration: paying ter
rorists in Afghanistan.
“Did y’all know Biden was
talking about giving money
to terrorists?” asked Walker
rhetorically. “Because we’ve
got to make them be nice.
I’m like, dude, that’s the rea
son they’re terrorists. They’re
terrorists because they don’t
like you. They told you, ‘I’m
going to kill Americans’.
We’ve got to stop this. We’ve
got to stop putting people in
Washington that just want to
be there for another feather
in their cap. I don’t need that
guys.”
To illustrate the need to
make products in America,
Walker recalled the time he
made the Olympic bobsled
team. Former NFL great
Willie Gault talked him into
trying out. He found out
only 15 out of 1500 would
make the team, and he had
never bobsledded.
“First of all, you know
black people hate cold
weather)’ joked Walker. But
his competitive juices got
going and Walker made the
team. But at their competi
tion, he noticed that Ameri
ca had rickety bobsleds and
then learned that they got
their bobsleds from their
competitors, the Austrians.
‘Are you serious?” Walker
recalled asking. “Who’s going
to sell you their best sled?!?”
Walker said the American
team finally started making
their own sleds in the U.S.
Herschel Walker and Tyler Wood of Forsyth at the fund
raiser Thursday.
and then started winning.
Walker said he’s gonna
have a serious race on his
hands next year winning the
GOP primary and unseating
Sen. Raphael Warnock. But
he said too much is at stake
not to go after it.
“It’s not about Herschel
Walker, it’s not about me,”
said Walker. “I love this
country. I love this state. I’ve
seen what’s happened to this
state in the last couple of
years and it’s not the way we
do it in Georgia. If we let this
go, we will wake up the next
day and not recognize this
country’
In a humorous bit of
bravado, Walker said he
thinks he’ll do well enough
that even Wamock may vote
for him.
“When he’s in that room by
himself, ain’t nobody look
ing at him, I guarantee he’s
going to mark my name!”
said Walker to applause
and laughter. Walker took
questions and one said that
while he’s not a soothsayer,
he thinks Walker will win
60 percent of the vote in
November 2022. Walker
thanked the man and added
with a smile, “I told them I

am going to win big. Two
touchdowns and a field goal.”
Walker said if he can bring
GOP senate leader Mitch
McConnell and Trump to
gether (both endorsed him),
he bring anyone together.
Finally, Walker was asked
his thoughts on UGAs
historic season so far. Walker
said he doesn’t watch a lot of
games on TV but does read
about his Bulldogs.
“That team this year is
better than the team I played
on (National Champs),”
said Walker. “They are not
intimidated by anybody.
They won’t be intimidated
by Alabama, but 1 want to be
honest, Alabama has got a
very, very good team.”
Walker said the SEC cham
pionship game will very
interesting because UGA
could lose and still make the
playoffs, but Bama probably
has to win to get to the Final
4.
