table Monroe County deaths
in 2021:

dentist Dr.

Bowcock,
Jr. passed
away Dec.
29,2020
after a
lengthy
illness.
Augustine
Hammersley
Jeanette Augustine Ham
mersley passed away on
Jan. 16,2021. She gradu
ated from Mary Persons
High
School in
1949, and
then from
Macon
Hospital
School of
Nursing.
Augustine led a long, suc
cessful career in nursing
and served as Director
of Nursing at a few local
long term care facilities.
Augustine also enjoyed
taking care of her family,
and showed her love for
them constantly through
visits, phone calls, and her
wonderful cooking.
Daniel Haygood Jr.
Daniel Haygood Jr.,
passed away on Jan. 26,
2021, after a long battle
with Parkinsons Disease.
He graduated from Mary
Persons where he enjoyed
friendships
from those
days and had
very fond
memories of
playing on
the football
team.
Growing up in his fam
ily’s various agricultural
endeavors, he later tran
sitioned to insurance and
financial services along
with other entrepreneur
ial ventures. For many
years he enjoyed vegetable
gardening, giving it up only
as the local deer population
dined relentlessly in his
garden. Dan was a devoted
church servant being a
member and deacon first at
Culloden Primitive Baptist
Church and then Grace
Primitive Baptist Church.
His mother the late Nan
nie Celia Abercrombie
Haygood was the famed
Peach Lady who sold Dick
ey’s Peaches in Culloden
past the age of 100.
Marcy Sanders
Marcy Sanders passed
away in an auto accident
on Jan. 25,2021 in Macon.
She was remembered was
a loving mother, devoted
Christian, faithful friend,
and a car
ing teacher
and coach
at Mary
Persons
whose
bright blue
eyes and
beautiful smile lit up every
room she entered.
Ricky Speir Sr.
Ricky Speir Sr., 69, passed
away on Feb. 3,2021. He
was a graduate of Mary
Persons and served his
country in the United
States Marine Corps from
1970-74. Ricky was retired
from the
Monroe
County
Sheriff
Office after
37 years of
service.
Angela
Harbuck
Angela Chambers Har
buck passed away on Feb. 2
due to complications from
an accidental fall in her
yard.
Tony Bowdoin
Tony Marvin Bowdoin,
58, passed away in his
home on Feb. 24,2021,
and is now with the Lord.
Tony was
the son of
Marvin
and Linda
Bowdoin.
He was a
graduate of
Mary Per
sons and
attended Georgia College
and State University. He
was co-owner of Bowdoin’s
Grocery until it sold in
2018.
Dan Pitts
Arthur Dan Pitts passed
away on April 20 surround
ed by his family. He gradu
ated from Lincolnton High
School where he enjoyed
playing football and base
ball for
the Red
Devils.
During
his senior
year,
he was
named
All State
Quarterback. His athletic
ability helped him earn
a football scholarship to
South Georgia College. He
completed his education at
the University of Georgia,
graduating in 1959. During
his stint in the U.S. Army,
he served in the 8457th
Military Police.
In 1957, he married
the love of his life, Mary
Lynda Stevenson, who was
also from Lincolnton. In
1959, having no previous
coaching experience, he
became the head coach at
Mary Persons High School,
where he remained for his
entire career. Under his
leadership, throughout the
39 year career at Mary Per
sons, his teams compiled
346 wins, 109 losses and 4
ties. The Bulldogs won 15
Region championships and
made 4 appearances in the
state finals, winning the AA
State Championship with
an undefeated season in
1980. In 1996, he became
the “Winningest Coach in
Georgia High School His
tory’ with 316 wins.
Gail King
Gail King passed away
April 16,2021, at Pine
Pointe Hospice. Gail, the
daughter of the late Albert
Franklin Marshall and
Dorothy Marie Johnson
Marshall, was born Nov.
23,1945 in Macon. She re
tired from Monroe County
as a clerk.
Jack Spillers
James Jackson “Jack”
Spillers Sr., 91, of Forsyth
passed on to glory sur
rounded by his family at
his home on June 11,2021.
Born on Jan. 13,1930 in
Macon, he was a faithful
husband, and a hard
working, caring father to 8
children.
A veteran, Jack served
in the U.S. Army during
World War II, where he
became an excellent cook
and also an electrician,
helping rebuild Guam
after a typhoon had leveled
buildings on the island.
A theologian, Jack served
in churches throughout his
adult life. He taught Sunday
School, was ordained as
a deacon, studied Biblical
Studies at Mercer Universi
ty in Macon, and earned an
advanced degree at South
western Baptist Theological
Seminary in Fort Worth,
Texas. He was called as
Pastor to churches in Texas,
Florida and Georgia.
A businessman, Jack es
tablished the first account
ing practices for multiple
S&S Cafeterias where he
worked as the Corporate
Accountant for 10 years.
Those familiar with
Forsyth’s town square may
recall the Farm House Res
taurant, a business which
Jack and Shirley owned
and managed for 18 years.
Thanks to their diligence
and warmth, the Farm
House was a hub of hospi
tality for the community.
He was a retired member

the Farm House Restau
rant. The accomplishment
of running a successful
family business while
maintaining family ties
and still ministering to the
community was no small
feat that both of them ac
complished together.
Jimmy Atkinson
James Gray “Jimmy”
Atkinson passed away June
23.2021. Jimmy graduated
from Mary Persons High
School and retired as the
owner/operator of Atkin
son’s Mid GA Auto Repair
& Collision.
In 1991, Jimmy and John
ny fulfilled their lifelong
dream together by opening
Mid GA here in Forsyth.
Jimmy had a special talent
of being able to fix any
thing and Johnny was a
talented painter. Jimmy
kept the dream alive even
after losing his best friend
and brother unexpectedly
in 1993.
Rickey Harbuck
Henry (Rickey) Rick-
enbaker Harbuck passed
away at his home on July
30.2021. Born on Aug. 7,
1938 in Forsyth, he gradu
ated from Mary Persons in
1956 and later spent three
years in the Army’s 82nd
Airborne Division in Fort
Bragg, N.C. He retired
from BellSouth as a cable
splicer with over 40 years
and was a member of Rus
sellville Baptist Church.
He enjoyed country life,
working at his farm, tend
ing to cows and baling hay
for many years.
Alyvia Slaton
Alyvia Leigh Slaton re
ceived her heavenly healing
on Aug. 22,2021. Alyvia
was born Jan. 25,2005,
in Macon. She played the
clarinet with the Monroe
County Marching Band. Af
ter being diagnosed with os
teosarcoma in 2019, staying
active with her band brought
her joy. Alyvia also had a
passion for medical science
and dreamed of becoming
a brain surgeon. In keeping
with this desire, one of her
final wishes was to donate
her organs
in hopes of
helping oth
ers fighting
her same bat
tle. She loved
animals,
especially her cat Mango.
She shared an unbreakable
bond with her best friend
from preschool, Sara, who
spent many days with her
during her treatment watch
ing TikTok, drawing, and
doing crafts.
