By Diane Glidewell
news@mymcr.net
Forsyth will celebrate Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr.’s birthday with a
community-wide event honoring
the legacy of Dr. King, on the Court
house square at 12 noon on Monday,
Jan. 17. Jesse Hicks, Head Football
Coach of Baldwin High School will
be the keynote speaker. All are invited
to share in this event.
Due to COVID-19 cases continuing
to increase, Forsyths traditional Mar
tin Luther King Jr. Day celebration
will be adapted for safety as it was
last year. The celebration committee,
chaired by James Hogan, decided it
best to forego the community march
from the square to Kynette United
Methodist Church and the program
at Kynette UMC that has brought
standing-room-only crowds and is
usually followed by a fellowship meal.
Coach Jesse C. Hicks is a native
of Augusta and a 1990 graduate of
Glenn Hills High School. As a stu
dent athlete with the Spartans, he was
an all-area, all-region, team captain
and team defensive MVP.
Attending Albany State University
on a full athletic scholarship, he was a
team captain and won three S.I.A.C.
football championships. He received
his BS degree in Health and Physical
Education, and was voted president
of the health and physical department
his senior year by
his peers. Hicks
went on to earn
his Master De
gree in Athletic
Administration
from Concordia
University in
Irvine, Ca.
Hicks taught
PE and coached
several sports at
Glenn Hills High
School for three
years then be
came linebacker
coach and special
team coordinator at
Albany State Univer
sity, working with his mentor Coach
James Mike White.
After three seasons at ASU, Bald
win County School System named
Hicks head football coach and athlet
ic director. Under his leadership the
Braves have had over 123 wins,168
athletes signing football scholarships,
three region championships, one
state football Dome appearance and
a 100 percent graduate rate out of his
players.
From 2010-2017 Hicks coached at
some other schools before return
ing to Baldwin
County, includ
ing a tenure at
Central High
School in Macon
from 2015-17.
He is the former
leader of the
Lundy Chapel
Mens Ministry in
Macon.
He is a member
of the Omega Psi
Phi Fraternity
Inc., and is the
founder of One
Helmet At A
Time, LLC. He has been
married to the former
Ebon L. Rice for 22 years and they
have two children, Taylor, 22, and
Jeremiah, 20.
Hicks says his ultimate work, rather
than winning football games, is to
speak truth into his players lives and
guide each of his players to become a
great father, husband and neighbor.
