Pair charged in theft of 18 wheeler, chase
Sheriff Brad Freeman says a
Tyrone couple is lucky to be alive
after stealing a tractor trailer from
Buices Garage, leading Monroe
County deputies on a high-speed
chase on 1-75 and having its tires
shot out before they were finally
apprehended.
Buices Garage had impounded
the stolen 18 wheeler after it was
involved in a wreck in Lamar
County around Dec. 24, said Jarrad
Duncan of the Monroe County
sheriffs office.
But on Jan. 6, the Tyrone man
who had originally stolen and
wrecked the tractor trailer appar
ently tried to steal it a second time
from Buices, located on Town
Creek Road in Forsyth. Here’s what
happened, according to Duncan: a
Buices tow truck driver had arrived
around 10 p.m. to get a tow truck
for a wreck when he noticed a trac
tor trailer’s engine running in the
impound lot. That’s when he called
Monroe County deputies. When
deputies arrive, Justin Crump, 34,
of Tyrone, hit the gas and drove
the tractor trailer through the
gate and headed to the interstate.
Crump took 1-75 south as depu
ties pursued, shooting out the tires
on the tractor trailer. Still, Crump
kept going on the rims all the way
to Hartley Bridge Road in south
Macon before deputies shot out the
radiator and the 18 wheeler finally
exited and stopped.
“We can’t just let that go,” said
Duncan. “He’s liable to kill some-
»
one.
Crump was charged with bur
glary, theft by taking and fleeing
and eluding.
A report said
Crump also cre
ated road debris
which damaged
the front bum
per and fender
well of Monroe
County deputy
Shania Hawkins’
patrol car.
Crump’s apparent wife Erin
Crump, 28, also of Tyrone, was
charged with burglary and theft by
taking.
Duncan said
he thinks the
suspects had a
drug problem
and he said the
investigation is
continuing.

GUEST COLUMN by Eddie Rowland
Monroe County will find a way in 2022
2 020was certainly
a year to forget for
many of us. COVID
turned our lives up
side down.
2021 continued with CO
VID challenges but we did
learn to live with it better
while still taking measures
to eradicate the virus. We
simply are working through
it.
Recently, I did a
TV interview after
the horrific train
crash that took the
lives of 3 of our
citizens. During
the interview, the
reporter said some
thing that stuck
with me. “Monroe County
just has a way of working
through their problems and
challenges”. It made me feel
good to be one of the 28,000
Monroe Countians that are
known for “Just working
through it”.
Five years ago we desper
ately needed to expand rural
broadband internet. The
citizens pushed leadership
to Make It Happen! They
agreed to put some SPLOST
money towards the effort.
Through the efforts of the
citizens, the commissioners,
school board, state legisla
tors, and our EMC leader
ship, we “worked
through it” and this
important service
is now becoming a
reality.
In early 2020,
the citizens of
the Juliette area
exposed the health
hazards of contaminated
wells in that area. The rest
of the county also wanted to
help their neighbors. They
pushed leadership to find
the way to expand water
and Make It Happen! The
leadership worked through
the bond process to procure
the money and then the
bid process to procure the
labor and materials. Now,
the county is in the middle
of the most expansive water
project in history. We, the
citizens along with the lead
ership, “Worked through it”
and brought safe drinking
water to the area.
Looking into 2022,1 see
the citizens request to im
prove fire service and road
quality become a reality.
These are things the citizens
again have said “Work
through it, and Make It
Happen”. The citizens’ vote
to pass the much needed
TSPLOST is certainly a
great example. I look for
ward to seeing completion
of some of the projects I’ve
mentioned and being in full
swing of others.
We will have more
projects rise to the surface
in 2022. Plant Scherer,
residential growth, com
mercial growth, rec expan
sion needs, are just a few.
As a citizen, I want the
leadership to smooth these
potential hills and valleys.
I want plans developed to
seamlessly work through
these issues with as little
financial or social incon
venience as possible. I’m
willing to sacrifice a little so
others can do as they want
with their property as long
as they take measures to
limit changing the lifestyle
I’ve come to know and love
on my own property. That’s
what I want as a citizen.
And that’s what I will work
towards as a community
leader. Welcome to 2022.
Now, let’s get after it.

District 2 on the Monroe
County Board of Commis
sioners.
