Mat Dogs make history
The Mary Persons Mat
Dogs advanced to the
Sweet 16 for the first time
in program history before
falling to Oconee County
last week.
The Bulldogs made
history by beating GAC
(Greater Atlanta Chris
tian) in the State Pre
liminary Duals 54-9 to
advance to the Second
Round at Oconee County.
In the next round MP
faced home-standing
Oconee County in the
Sweet 16. It was a hard
fought match in the begin
ning. MP fell 27-53, but
MP wrestling coach Bar
ron Hamlin said the score
doesn’t tell the whole story.
“We hung with them
until our forfeits started,”
said Hamlin. “We had to
give away 5 weight classes
due to either no wrestler
or injuries. I cant say
enough of how proud I
was of our team Saturday
and really the season. This
was the first time since
the program started in
2015 that an MP Wrestling
team made it to the State
Duals, but then the Sweet
16 round. We should have
been in the Elite 8. Don’t
get me wrong, Coach
Yauck has a good program
over at Oconee, but we
were a few weight classes
away from being in the
Elite 8.”
The Mat Dogs will wrap
up the season with Senior
Night at home Wednes
day and then compete in
Area Traditionals Jan. 29
at Upson Lee for a spot in
the individual side of the
sport.

National Celebration
A lot of UGA fans from Monroe County travelled to Athens on
Saturday as 90,000 packed into Sanford Stadium to cel
ebrate the school s first title in 41 years. At left, UGA cheer
leader Macy Morris of Forsyth braves the cold to watch the
festitivies. Far left, Monroe Academy graduate Jeff Harper
and other members of the 1980 UGA national title team
raised the new 2021 banner on Saturday. (Photos/Will Davis)
The day before deer
season ended, Asa But-
tigieg was deer hunting
from a double stand with
father, Dustin Buttigieg,
in Monroe County. At
last I egal light, two deer
emerged and Asa landed
a perfect shot on his first
deer. He was shooting a
youth model Weatherby
Vanguard 6.5 Creed-
moor. Asa now can’t wait
for the 2022 deer season
to kick off!
