CAMPERS
Continued from 1A
property near the intersec
tion of Hwy. 87 said she lives
there legally because she was
grandfathered in. She said
her father has owned the
property for 40 years and
she has been there for 19.
She said three years ago she
went to the county permit
office and was told she didn’t
need a permit. Workers
from Georgia Power are
staying in eleven other spots
near her fathers house and
there are numerous other
campers living nearby. Some
are set up in locations with
over a dozen RVs sitting
together in a rusting clump
visible from the road.
There are an estimated 400
sites scattered around the
county where dilapidated
campers are situated in
cluttered locations. Some
folks have been living in
these cramped conditions
for years. Most residents
we tried to speak with were
extremely tight-lipped and
didn’t care to discuss their
living situation with the
Reporter, citing possible
issues with their employers
or landlords if they were
quoted in this newspaper.

Monroe County Commis
sioners actually approved
a property maintenance
ordinance last Thursday that
would have made most of
these living arrangements il
legal. However commission
ers rescinded the 32-page
ordinance to relax some of
the rules. But a modified
version is expected to go
into effect this April.
District 3 commissioner
John Ambrose said the
ordinance will give code
enforcement officers some
teeth to have temporary
housing moved. He said the
campers need septic tanks,
water and electrical hooks,
and everything else that a
permanent home requires.
Ambrose said, “There are
too many landowners who
are just letting these camp
ers sit on their land illegally.
Some say they are here for a
three-month period, such as
Georgia Power workers but
many end up living in these
conditions for years. It’s a
health issue.” County law
requires a minimum of one
acre for a permanent home.
