Mat Dogs make history again
The Mary Persons wres
tling team made history
again last week when it
placed as runner ups for
the first time ever in the
Area Traditionals. The
Bulldogs also made history
by placing their first Area
Champion, and not just
one champ but three.
“Words can not describe
of how proud I am of these
wrestlers, this team, and
both wrestling programs,”
said MP wrestling coach
Barron Hamlin. “The 2021-
2022 wrestling season has
been very successful to this
point and we haven’t even
finished the high school
season. Friday and Satur
day the 7 qualifiers will
compete in sectionals, and
from there the top 6 will
move on to State Tradition
al Tournament in Macon.”
Seven Bulldog wrestlers
advanced to the State
Sectionals next weekend at
Lumpkin County HS.
Here are the seven who
are advancing:

Bulldogs beat Howard, Pike
heading into region tourney
The Mary Persons boys basketball
team improved to 12-11,5-7 in the
region after going 2-1 last week as
the Bulldogs seek to gain momentum
going into the Region 2-AAA tourna
ment.
On Friday, Jan. 28 the Bulldogs lost
to Upson-Lee (12-9, 7-5 region) 70-
52 in Thomaston. Kham Little led the
Bulldogs with 21 points, going 8 of 12
from the free throw line. Ty Dumas,
Jake LaVinka and Bobby Bunn had
6 apiece. Little also led on the boards
with 7 rebounds. LaVinka had 6. The
Bulldogs had beaten the Knights 74-
66 when they met on Jan. 4.
The Bulldogs fared better on
Wednesday, Jan. 26 in a 67-58 win
over Howard (0-22). Ty Dumas
had 19 points and was red hot from
2-point land, going 8 for 10. Little
added 16. Maury Lowe had 10 points.
LaVinka and Little led with 6 re
bounds each.
The day before, on Tuesday, Jan.
25, MP throttled Pike (1-18) 94-84
as Kham Little had a season high 35
points, going 13 of 19 from the floor
and 9 of 16 from the line. Lowe added
23 points, going 6 of 10 from the free
throw line. LaVinka had 14. Dumas
and LaVinka led the team with 8
rebounds each.
The Bulldogs were slated to play at
Jackson (4-14) on Tuesday. Results
were not available at press time. They
will host region leader Americus-
Sumter (20-2) on Friday, Feb. 4 in
the regular season finale before next
weeks region tournament. The Bull
dogs will have to win some games in
the tournament to make the playoffs.

Starr, Germany to commit
on National Signing Day
Senior MP offensive linemen Jarvis Germany, left, and
Austin Starr are expected to sign letters of intent to play
college football in the Mary Persons library on Wednes
day, National Signing Day for college football. Germany
is headed to Georgia Military College in Milledgeville
while Starr is headed to Wingate College in Monroe, N.C.
