Mary Persons names two
STAR students, teachers
By Diane Glidewell
news@mymcr.net
The Mary Persons Class
of2022 has twice the
usual STARs shining as it
announces a tie for STAR
student with each STAR
student naming a STAR
teacher. The two outstand
ing students are Marlee
Coffman and Maradeth
Leverette. Marlee named
math teacher Dr. Sara Wil
liams as her STAR teacher,
and Maradeth chose retired
Project SOAR teacher
Wanda Pope as her STAR
teacher.
Principal Dr. Jim Finch
said that to his knowledge
this is the first time that
two seniors have tied for
the title of Mary Persons
STAR student. The STAR
student is the senior with
the highest SAT score who
is also in the top 10 percent
of grade point average for
the graduating class. Mara
deth and Marlee are both
in the top 10 percent of
the Class of2022 and both
scored 1400 on the SAT.
As is the tradition at
Mary Persons, the students
are notified of their honor,
but the news is kept quiet
until the teachers are sur
prised with the announce
ment. On Thursday, Jan. 27
the teachers were surprised
by representatives of the
Forsyth Monroe County
Chamber of Commerce,
which sponsors the STAR
student and teacher recog
nition, and Mary Persons
administrators. Coinciden-
tally, Marlee and Maradeth
were both in Williams’
Advanced Placement math
class when the group en
tered to congratulate her on
being a 2022 STAR teacher.
Both Maradeth and Mar
lee have attended Monroe
County Schools since pre
school. Although Marlee
left briefly during 6th
grade. Both of them rate
math among their favorite
subjects and are enthusias
tic about their classes with
Williams at Mary Persons
over the last three years.
Both of them also have
high praise for Pope and
their experiences with her
in the Project SOAR gifted
program from kindergar
ten to 5th grade. Although
Maradeth attended Hub
bard Elementary and Mar
lee was a student at T.G.
Scott Elementary, at that
time all elementary stu
dents in the gifted program
met together weekly.
Both STAR students took
the SAT, which is designed
to predict how successful
a student will be academi
cally in college, twice, and
neither of them did a lot
of preparation specifi
cally for the SAT. Both had
scores relatively balanced
between the language arts
and math portions of the
test, although both of them
scored a little higher in the
language arts portion than
in the math part.
“I don’t really like Eng
lish,” said Marlee. “I want to
focus on math and science
[in the future].”
She has been accepted to
the University of Georgia
and plans to attend the
UGA Veterinary school
after she earns her under
graduate degree, special
izing in large animals.
She completed two of
her required high school
English classes through
dual enrollment at Middle
Georgia State College.
Marlee is the daughter of
Tony & Sharron Coffman.
Her mother, Patti, passed
away when Marlee was six.
She has two older sib
lings, Mackenzie, 25, and
Gramm, 24. Her favorite

Why You Need a COVID-19 Booster Shot
Vaccines work very well to protect Specific to the Omicron variant,
against severe illness, hospitalizations, a booster is proven to increase
