ROBBERS
INCIDENT REPORTS . February 23, 2022
The following incidents were reported by the Forsyth Police Department
and the Monroe County Sheriffs Office.
Unlicensed driver
goes to jail after fleeing
While watching 1-75 traffic
from the High Falls Road bridge,
deputy Cody Maples was notified
by dispatch that the Butts County
Sheriff’s Office was in pursuit of a
silver 2019 Audi SW driven by an
Atlanta man heading southbound
around 2 a.m. on Feb. 1. When
Maples spotted the speeding
vehicle, he joined the chase at
speeds reaching 130 mph while
the Audi was passing vehicles on
the right shoulder and failing to
maintain its lane. At one point,
the driver took the Johnstonville
Road exit, failed to stop at the
sign and reentered the interstate.
The Audi later maneuvered as
if to exit at Hwy. 18 but con
tinued from the right exit lane
through the other lanes, in and
out of other vehicles. Maples
then performed a PIT maneuver
and disabled the car on the right
shoulder. Deputy Zubia broke
the drivers side window with his
baton and the man was removed
from the car and taken into
custody. Dispatch said he had
an active arrest warrant and was
driving on a suspended license.
The car was towed by Corner Lot
Towing.
Warrant executed on
driver near courthouse
The license plates were checked
on a vehicle by officer John Bog
dan who was positioned in front
of the Courthouse on North Lee
Street on Feb. 5 and he learned
the registration was expired. After
pulling over the male driver and
running his license, Bogdan dis
covered the man had a warrant
out of Spalding County and they
wished to place a hold. He was
taken to the Monroe County Jail
to await transportation to Spald
ing County.
Three men in jail
after routine stop
A man was found to have
several warrants, a convicted
felon was found in possession of
a Taurus G3 handgun under his
passenger seat, and the driver of a
2002 Chevrolet Tahoe was found
to be unlicensed after Sgt. Ste
phen Phipps spotted the darkly
tinted vehicle with a burned-out
taillight and made a stop on 1-75
N near High Falls Road around
3:05 p.m. on Feb. 7.
Phipps could smell marijuana
as he approached the Tahoe and
asked if any of the 5 male occu
pants were in possession and the
35-year-old Atlanta driver, and
a 25-year-old passenger handed
the sergeant a small amount of
pot which he destroyed. After
calling for backup, Phipps asked
all the men for their IDs and
discovered a 56-year-old pas
senger had several outstanding
warrants out of Putman County
and was handcuffed. The front
seat passenger admitted the pistol
was his and after a check for
felony convictions he also was
arrested. The driver was cuffed
for driving without a license and
all three Atlanta men were taken
to the Monroe County Jail. The
vehicle was released to one of the
remaining two passengers.
Woman: I couldn't pass
sobriety test even if sober
An intoxicated 43-year-old
Macon woman was arrested
for DUI-refusal and an open
container by deputy Shania
Hawkins after she ran out of gas
near North Lee Street around
10:13 p.m. on Feb. 7. Hawkins
was dispatched to assist the driver
who was standing outside her
2015 Kia and told her she had
only been there for a few min
utes. When the deputy asked for
her license, the woman lost her
balance and nearly fell when she
went back to her car. Hawkins
could smell alcohol and deputy
Bryson asked the driver if she had
been drinking. She replied she
had a cranberry and vodka a few
hours earlier at a restaurant.
She agreed to take a sobriety
test and after missing 5 heel-to-
toe steps and failing to count out
loud, she told the deputies, “I
couldn’t do this if I was sober.”
That concluded the test, and she
was arrested and taken to jail.
Woman resists arrest after
causing disruption at Valero
A woman was cited for dis
orderly conduct around 2 a.m.
on Feb. 8 after officer Dexter
McCune was summoned to the
Valero Gas Station on North Lee
Street. A station employee told
McCune a woman had entered
the store around 10 times without
buying anything and was harass
ing the customers. He said he
asked her to leave several times
but after her refusal, he called
911.
McCune asked the woman for
her side of the story, and she told
him she didn’t think it was fair
that she was asked to leave the
business. The officer explained
that a business can refuse service
to anyone and ask them to leave
at any time. He then asked her to
leave the premises several times.
After she refused, and failed to
comply with any of his instruc
tions, McCune tried to handcuff
her and after a short time of
resisting, she finally was placed in
the rear of his patrol car.
McCune ran a check on her
2013 Volkswagen Passat and
learned the registration was ex
pired. She was also cited for that
infraction and taken to jail.
Woman arrested on inter
state for no insurance
A woman was turned over to
jail personnel after officer Rich
ard Maddox ran the plates on her
blue Toyota Camry and learned
the registration was suspended
and the vehicle had no insurance
around 12:59 p.m. on Feb. 8.
Maddox made the stop near Hwy.
83 on 1-75 S and the woman
couldn’t provide her insurance
information and said her policy
had lapsed the previous Saturday
and she had not been able to pay
her premium. She was then asked
to step from her vehicle and
taken to jail.
Wanted man arrested
after traffic stop
A man was stopped in front of
Piedmont Hill Apartments by
officer John Bogdan on Feb. 9
and went to jail after the officer
learned he had an outstanding
warrant. Bogdan pulled him over
when he learned his vehicle had
an expired registration. Dispatch
said they wanted to place a hold
on him for the warrant, and he
was turned over to jail staff.
Florida man busted
with jars of weed
The Florida driver of white
2011 Nissan Altima was found
to have jars of marijuana in his
possession on Feb. 10 around
5:32 p.m. by Sgt. Jake Justice who
later took the man to the Monroe
County Jail. Justice saw the Nis
san following too closely behind
a pickup truck and then pull into
the southbound weigh station on
1-75. After Justice activated his
lights, the driver parked behind
the office building of the station.
He told the sergeant he pulled
in because he was looking for
somewhere to get gas. Justice told
him he was being stopped for
following too closely and could
smell marijuana during their
conversation. As the man was
looking for his registration and
insurance, Justice noticed a black
backpack sitting in the passenger
side floorboard with a football
logo. After a short conversation
about the man playing football
for Nebraska, Justice returned to
his vehicle to request backup. He
then asked the man to exit the
car and patted him down while
asking about marijuana in his car.
He told Justice he did have some
marijuana inside of his car, and it
was in the book bag.
Inside the bag a gallon contain
er, a Mason jar, and a pickle jar
all of which contained marijuana
were found. Also, a smoked
marijuana cigarette was inside the
ash tray. Justice will seek charges
for distributing marijuana, and a
citation will be issued for follow
ing too closely.
Man cited for
weed possession
Officer Richard Maddox
watched a green Dodge Char
ger fail to stop at a stop sign on
Main Street at Indian Springs Dr.
on Feb. 11 and after making a
stop, discovered the male driver
was in possession of marijuana.
Maddox could smell weed as the
driver was getting out his license
and asked if there was any in the
vehicle. The man said there was
and handed the officer a clear
plastic bag containing around
7-8 grams of marijuana. He was
cited and released with a date to
appear. The marijuana was seized
and placed into evidence.
The following arrests were reported by the Monroe County Sheriffs Office and Forsyth
Police Department, An arrest means someone has been charged with a crime, but the
law considers them innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
