Forsyth Antiques &

Tax auction set for Tuesday
By Diane Glidewell

There were no spaces left
in the parking lot, the aisles
were filled with customers,
merchandise kept flowing
out the door and friends
kept grabbing the three
partners to congratulate
them as Forsyth Monroe
County Chamber of Com
merce hosted a ribbon
cutting for Forsyth Antiques
&More on Feb. 10. To
say that the former cotton
warehouse at 816 Highway
41 South was filled with
people has considerable im
pact when one realizes how
expansive the building is.
Cindy Allen, Dianne Hat-
taway and Carol Robeson
are partners in the business
that opened its doors last
November. Allen said they
had worked for months to
get the building ready and
expected to open slowly and
grow the business in baby
steps, like being open 2-3
days/week at first. She said
that only lasted one week.
Now Forsyth Antiques &
More is open Tuesday - Sat
urday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
The front phase of 39 ven
dors quickly filled, and the
back phase with space for
more than 30 more vendors
is also full. Only wall space
is available right now.
There is a waiting list
of other vendors, and, of
course, the existing ones vie
for opportunities to move
to more prominent spaces.
There is definitely some
thing to catch the attention
of everyone. From toys,
cookware, paintings, glass
ware and tools that take one
back to Grandmas house
and Grandpas shop to
unique furniture and craft
items. About 80-85 percent
of the items at the business
are antiques while there is
also a percentage of com
plimentary offerings that
account for the “& More.”
Locals may have a chance
to find some real estate
deals as the county holds a
tax auction on the court
house steps on Tuesday,
March 1.
The properties are listed
in the legal section of this
weeks Reporter. Tax com
missioner Lori Andrews
is advertising 27 parcels
trying to collect more than
$114,000 in unpaid taxes.
The delinquent proper
ties are set to be auctioned
off on the courthouse steps
at 10 a.m. on Tuesday,
March 1. Bidding opens at
the amount of taxes owed
on the property. Buyers
must bring certified funds
or cash to buy the delin
quent properties, and pay
a $12 recording fee. Under
the law, buyers aren’t able
to touch the property for
366 days after the auc
tion, giving the property
owner a year to re-claim
it. However, to reclaim the
property, the original prop
erty owner would have to
pay 120 percent of what the
buyer paid, said Andrews.

Allen said that she had
handled estate sales for
about eight years, and
Robeson worked with her.
Hattaway was a long-time
friend who shared their vi
sion as they kept saying how
they would like to have a
store. When another friend
said that her husband might

Partners Carol Robeson, Dianne Hattaway and Cindy Allen team up to cut the ribbon at Forsyth Antiques & More on
Feb. 10 with lots of supporters cheering them on.

sider renting to them, they
checked out the large brick
building beside the railroad
track and began working to
make it happen.
“It has been overwhelming
how it has taken off with the
support of the community’
said Allen.
Some vendors are local,
and many others have local
connections, but they also
come from Barnesville, Ma
con, Perry, Kathleen, Atlanta
and beyond. Some vendors
have friendly competitions
with one another, including
one husband and wife. Pa
trons come from as far away
as the vendors, including
several who have stopped
by as they travel 1-75 headed
from “the North” to Florida.
Forsyth Antiques & More
is proving to be a great
place to spend an hour or
so walking around. There is
something new to discover
around every turn, and the
interesting items tucked into
each nook and cranny are
constantly changing as items
go out the door to new
owners and more items take
their places.
“We keep hearing,
‘Forsyth needed this,”’ said
Robeson.
Mary Beth Rutherford of
Sandy Springs is one of the
vendors whose wares aren’t
antiques. However, she said
that her creations at MB’s
Marketplace have the old
school feel of a simpler time.
Items like her “gathering
aprons” were inspired by her
grandmother and bring the
comforting feel of nostalgia.
Robeson was Rutherford’s
kindergarten teacher a few
years ago.
Rutherford said she has
enjoyed meeting other ven
dors and patrons, and the
bus
tling traffic through Forsyth
Antiques & More is keeping
her venture successful.
Robeson said the build
ing dates back to the 1840’s
but has only belonged
to a couple of families. It
now belongs to Henry
Hicks, who operates busi
nesses across the street.
Greg Thompson of Greg’s
Georgia Gardens, who has
Space #60 with what he calls
“Man-tiques,” enhanced
the landscaping outside the
building to have it ready for
the ribbon cutting. He also
brought his restored orange
Barracuda. The hom of a
passing train completed the
ambiance.
“Come find us; you’ll love
us,” said Robeson.
