County getting $6 million for water
Monroe County is getting
a $6 million state grant
for its $20 million Juliette
water project and Forsyth
will receive $3.9 million for
water and sewer projects,
Gov. Brian Kemp an
nounced on Tuesday. Also
Culloden will get $81,000
for its water system.
Those grants were part
of $422 million in prelimi
nary award to high-need
areas for drinking water
and wastewater systems,
said Kemp. The announce
ment listed 116 water
systems across Georgia that
will share in the awards.
Recipients were selected
by the Water and Sewer
Infrastructure Commit
tee, which is made up of
13 state leaders, including
Rep. Robert Dickey, who
represents part of Monroe
County and is chairman of
the House Agriculture and
Consumer Affairs Com
mittee.
Clean up, company’s coming:
County-wide ‘police call’ March 5
By Sloan Oliver
sloanoliver@earthlink.com
Police Call. Everyone
who has served in the
military has conducted
a police call - go outside
and pick up trash and
litter. Make the area look
good. When guests come
over, we want our house
and yard to look its best.
Next month, the Forsythia
Festival will bring hun
dreds (perhaps thousands)
of out-of-town guests to
Monroe County. Fets pitch
in and make our county
look its best. The county
commissioners and The
Reporter are designating
March 5 as a county wide
police call - a day of trash
and litter pick-up.
Meet-up locations are as
follows:
• Forsyth - meet Tom
Perry at City Hall parking
lot at 10:00 am. (Perry has
grabbers and trash bags.)
• Bolingbroke - meet
Sloan Oliver at Mount
Zion Baptist Church
(Rivoli Road) at 9:00am
• High Falls - meet Joe
Reed at Buck Creek Mar
ket across from the Water
Park at 9:00am.
• Juliette - meet at the
Fire Station
• Culloden - meet at City
Hall
At the above locations,
litter pick-up areas will
be assigned. (Juliette and
Culloden, decide among
yourselves.) If you want
to participate, and cannot
make one of the designat
ed locations, no problem.
Simply adopt a section of
highway near your house.
We re going with the adage
- Where two or more are
gathered, clean-up will oc
cur. The only requirements
are the physical ability
and the will to do your
part. Oh, and appropriate
clothing, gloves, and trash
bags (bring your own) are
needed.
Monroe County has
hundreds of miles of roads
and highways. No one
person or group can pos
sibly keep the highways
policed up. However, col
lectively, with individuals
working together, we can
make a dent in the accu
mulated trash. Marty (on
Taylor Road), Robin (on
Pea Ridge Road), Brittany
and Brian (on Blue Store
Road), and others who live
on county roads - grab
your neighbors and adopt
a mile or two of highway.
Sheriff Freeman, Boy
Scouts, Girl Scouts, high
schoolers who need volun
teer hours, and other civic
groups are encouraged to
participate in the clean-up.
Those who live on county
highways, you know the
areas most in need - 4-way
stops and round-abouts,
interstate off ramps, under
bridges, areas around the
county recycle centers, and
other slow-down areas - all
have litter problems.
Hopefully, March 5
wont be a one-time event.
Throughout the year, the
highways need your help
with trash pick-up. A
shout-out to the Cowarts
(in Bolingbroke) who, last
week, picked up 10 bags of
trash on Old Popes Ferry
Road. Just remember, “if
not you, who?”
