New leaders keep Bolingbroke
Community Club going strong
By Sloan Oliver

G regg Phillips and
Brandy
Bankston-

called it the “end of an
era.” In many ways, it
was. I’m referring to
the changing of the
guard at the Boling
broke Community
Club (BCC).
Beginning Febru
ary, after 21 years as the president,
Vicki Smith stepped down as the
leader of the BCC. Major kudos
goes to Vicki for the work she’s
done. For over two decades, she
has been the driving force of orga
nization in Bolingbroke.
Originally, Vicki got involved in
the BCC to insure the Bolingbroke
Christmas Parade continued each
year. She wanted her kids (and
now grandkids) to be able to par
ticipate in the parade. However,
Vicki, and husband Bobby Lee,
want to spend more time with
family (i.e. grandkids) and have
handed the leadership reins over
to the next generation.
Fortunately for Bolingbroke,
Greg and Brandy have answered
the call. They’ve volunteered to be
co-presidents of the BCC. Why
two people to do the work of one?
First, it shows the commitment
and effort that Vicki gave to the
community (She did the work of
two). Second, the real reason,
both Greg and Brandy have
work (and family) obligations
that will prevent them from
attending all the monthly
meetings.
Greg is in law enforcement,
and Brandy is in real estate.
Plus, the expression “two is
better than one” certainly
holds true.
Several weeks ago I met Greg
and Brandy, along with Vicki
and Bobby Lee, at Properties
Plus Realty to talk about their
new positions. After talking to
them, it was obvious that the BCC
couldn’t have done better. Both
are life-long residents of Monroe
County, grew up in Bolingbroke,
played together as kids, graduated
from Mary Persons only two years
apart, (Greg graduated in 1996,
Brandy in ’98.) and have no plans
to go anywhere else.
I enjoy listening to people tell
their “back in the day” stories.
That’s what Greg and Brandy did
- told stories about hanging out
at the old Bolingbroke hardware
store. It had a pool table, so that’s
where all the locals gathered to
hang out. Kids showed up on

bicycles, on horses, and when
they got older, in their cars - to
go swimming in the pond, mud
bogging down off Estes Road, and
getting caught smoking cigarettes;
memories shared from 30 years
ago. Now, Greg and Brandy realize
that it’s their time to help the
community.
What is the Bolingbroke Com
munity Club? It’s a non-profit 501-
3C organization with two main
goals - be a voice, when needed,
for the community; and to keep
the Christmas parade going.
In reality, the BCC is a com
munity social group that allows
residents to connect with each
other. Too often in today’s society,
we hardly know our neighbors.
The monthly meetings try to
overcome that by being a place to
share a meal, meet new neighbors,
talk about local issues, and listen
to an interesting speaker.
The club meets at 6 p.m. the
first Tuesday of the month at Mt.
Zion Baptist Church. Who can
join? Anyone, you don’t even have
to live in Monroe County. Most
members live outside the “down
town” Bolingbroke area, scattered
about on Pea Ridge Rd, Klopfer,
New Forsyth, Estes, Pate Rd. etc.
In other words, anyone who lives
in or around Bolingbroke is wel
come and encouraged to join. Call
Brandy at 478-957-5269. Family
and business memberships are
$50/year.
Back in January, Greg and
Brandy sent out a community
letter with some of their goals and
objectives for the BCC. Their first
