The FPD boys soccer
team won back-to-back
region titles for the first
time in program history on
Thursday, March 17 with a
wild, 3-2 penalty kick win
over Stratford cemented
when Monroe County’s
Catch Kitchell made his
PK.
The Vikings (10-1-2,
4-0 Region 1-A private)
found themselves down 1-0
after the Eagles scored an
early goal at Stratford. But
later in the half, Mornoe
Countys Park Davis eluded
two defenders and fed
junior sensation Ty Petti
grew down the left sideline.
Pettigrew dribbled up the
baseline to the goal and
smartly rolled a single shot
behind the keeper, who
deflected it into the goal to
tie it at 1-1.
But the Eagles (3-7-1,1-3
region) wouldn’t quit and
retook the lead with about
12 minutes left in the game.
The Vikings began a furi
ous effort to knot the game
before regulation ended,
and succeeded when Petti
grew did it again, this time
approaching from the right
MP boys
look to
secure
playoff
position
flank.
Neither team could score
in 2 10-minute overtime
periods so this Middle
Georgia rivalry went to
penalty kicks, with a large
St. Patrick’s Day crowd
looking on. Pettigrew and
Monroe County’s Gun
ner Heath made their PKs
and keeper Clay Pearson
made two saves to give
FPD the chance to win.
Kitchell, a sophomore
who lives in River Forest,
calmly knocked his PK
into the right corner and
the Vikings celebrated the
history-making win.
On Tuesday, March 15,
the Vikings beat Deerfield-
Windsor (2-3,0-2) 2-0. Pet
tigrew had both goals and
Monroe County’s Gunner
Heath had an assist.
With the wins last week
the Vikings assured them
selves home field advantage
in the first two rounds of
the state playoffs if they
advance.
FPD is off this week for
spring break but hosts
Upson-Lee (7-4-1, 3-1
region) in a non-region tilt
on Tuesday, March 29.
The Mary Persons boys
soccer team scored more
goals on unbeaten region
leader Pike County than
any team all season, but fell
8-3 to the Pirates (10-0) last
Tuesday, March 15.
Luis Martinez, Asher
Dingmore and Chance
Wiggins scored for MP in
the Pike loss in Zebulon,
and Dingmore had two
assists.
The Bulldogs are now
7-5-1, 3-1 in region and
can clinch a playoff spot
in two big region games
this week. The Dogs host
Sumter County (4-2) on
Tuesday, March 22 (results
not available at press time)
and play at Jackson (9-4-1,
4-1 region) on Thursday,
March 24. The Dogs host
Union Grove (8-1, 3-0)
on Tuesday, March 29 in a
non-region match before
finishing the regular season
hosting Upson-Lee on
April 1.
