Monroe Co. CHURCH CALENDAR
Like the royal welcome of Palm
Sunday, let us welcome Jesus
T he Center for Spiritual Life at
Brandeis University recalls Palm
Sunday as "an event in the New
Testament of Jesus entering
into Jerusalem and being greeted by the
people waving palm branches'. The palm
branch is a symbol of victory, triumph,
peace and eternal life.
Matthew 21:5 says
"Tell ye the daughter
of Zion, Behold, thy
King cometh unto thee,
meek, and sitting upon
an ass, and a colt the
foal of an ass”.
Matthew 21:8-11
goes on to say "And a
very great multitude
spread their garments
in the way; others cut
down branches from
the trees, and strewed
them in the way" "And
the multitudes that went before, and that
followed, cried, saying Hosanna to the
Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh
in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in
the highest" "And when he was come
into Jerusalem, all the city was moved,
saying Who is this? And the multitude
said, This is Jesus the prophet of Naza
reth of Galilee".
For Christians, it is a reminder of the
welcoming of Jesus into our hearts and
our willingness to follow him.
There are a few important things about
Jesus' royal welcome into Jerusalem that
we must remember and observe today.
1. The way must be prepared for Jesus.
Some might feel it to be a costly way
filled with trials and pain. But, just as the
multitudes in Matthew 21:8 threw down
their garments, we must be willing to give
the best of our possessions, our talents,
our time and even our life itself. Nothing
is too costly on the pathway to Jesus.
2. The way must be a way of beauty. The
highway of salvation which Jesus walked
should not be seen as a hard and dirty
one filled with potholes, ruts and debris.
It must be seen as a pathway of beauty,
pleasantness and peace.
3. The way must be marked by enthu
siasm. The multitudes in Jerusalem that
day so long ago were not afraid to shout
out their emotions. They made the walls
reverberate and the hills to
echo their sounds. Let us
also rejoice and let others
hear our joy.
Palm Sunday is the
beginning of Holy Week
where Christians com
memorate the events lead
ing up to the crucifixion
and Resurrection of Jesus.
It is a reminder of God's
sacrifice of his son and his
love of all his people.
I leave you with three
verses from the United
Methodist Hymnal written
by Isaac Watts in 1707 and 1709 and pub
lished as Hymns and Spiritual Songs.
1 "To Jesus endless prayer be made, and
endless praises crown his head; his name
like sweet perfume shall rise with every
morning sacrifice".
2 "Blessings abound where're he reigns,
all prisoners leap and loose their chains;
and weary find eternal rest, and all who
suffer want are blest"
3. "Let every creature rise and bring
honors peculiar to our King; angels de
scend with songs again, and earth repeat
the loud amen'.
