The Mary Persons Bull
dogs baseball team has had
an historic season winning
a school record 23 straight
games, but that wont in
clude a Region 2-AAA title
after MP fell to No. 1-ranked
Pike County on Tuesday
The Pirates shutout
the Bulldogs in Zebulon
on Tuesday 7-0. MP just
couldn’t hit Pikes vaunted
pitcher who was throwing
at major league speeds of 88
mph. The Bulldogs will have
another chance to beat Pike
at home on Thursday, but
MP had to win both to have
a shot at the region title.
The Bulldogs did better
on Friday, April 17 when
Thomas Brooks took the
mound at Central High
School for MP’s 5th game
in 5 days. It was the second
meeting between these two
region opponents during
the week. The first game
was an 11-3 MP victory
that pushed the winning
streak to 23 games. Brooks
went 3 innings, striking out
7 batters while giving up
zero hits on the day. He also
belted a grand slam in the
fourth inning, his 6th homer
of the season. The game was
not much of a contest as
MP jumped all over Central
with 9 runs in the first in
ning and finishing the game
with a final score of 15-0.
Brycen Home made his way
back onto the mound in
this game for one inning of
relief. Horne looked good
on the mound while still
getting some of his strength
back averaging 80 mph on
the mound with his fastball
mixed in with some good
off-speed pitches. He struck
out the side in order to end
the game.
In the first matchup
against region opponent
Crisp County, MP took the
85-mile journey to Cordele
on Thursday April 14. Last
year Crisp was able to best
the Bulldogs by a score of
6-2 in their home park. This
year shows a different story.
With this being the 4th
game in 4 days, Ian Lewis,
who is battling a lower
extremity injury, took the
mound. Lewis struck out 7
of the first 8 batters he faced
before finally giving up a hit
in the 3rd inning. Crisp did
finally manage to manufac
ture a rim in the 4th inning
before the inning ended by
a 2-6-2 put out as
a runner tried to
steal home, ending
any other possible scoring
chances or threats by Crisp.
Lewis finished the game
pitching 5 innings, giving
up 1 rim, 5 hits, and striking
out 11 batters including
the last 3 to end the game.
Offensively, Mary Persons
didn’t leave their bats at
home as they amassed a to
tal of 14 runs on 11 hits led
by Jake Gore’s 3 RBIs on the
day. In the fourth inning the
Bulldogs started to pull away
from their 1 -0 lead with four
