As reported in last weeks news paper, Forsyth Police Cpl. Jeremy Malone was confronted by Stroud and Monroe County sheriff’s captain Mike Ogletree on the night of April 12. Merrick Smith was pulling a car carrier on Hwy. 41 just west of Forsyth when he said he heard a pop and pulled over. His cabin soon filled with smoke from the engine. The driver tried to reach for his fire extinguisher but before he could, the fire leapt out of control and he had to jump out of his rig. The Forsyth Fire Department responded and put out the blaze but the rig appeared to be a total loss. Thankfully he had just dropped most of his cars at a dealership and was on his way to Warner Robins with just one more vehicle, which was at the back of the carrier and so looked to be OK. Report: Drunk High Falls man tear gassed in RV for threats to shoot neighbors By Steve Reece stevereece@gmail.com A High Falls couple had to be tear gassed from an RV on April 18 around 4 p.m. after refusing to comply with deputies who were responding to a report of a man shooting a shotgun. According to the sheriffs report, Monroe County deputy Cody Maples was COOK dispatched to 4927 High Falls Road in reference to a couple argu ing and a man shooting his shotgun towards a house. Jennifer Steadham told Maples that Robert Cook, 51, from Lot 8, had been shooting a shotgun and had fired in the direction of a house to the east of the RV park and she called 911. She added that Cook had been drinking all day. Steadham said David Goss, from Lot 7, exited his camper to see what was happening and walked to the back of the camper where Cook pointed the gun at him and told him that he was shooting beer cans and that he’d shoot him too. Cook then went in and out of the camper several times with the shotgun and finally went in and stayed. Another witness, Brandi Queen, confirmed Steadham’s statements. By Will Davis publisher@mymcmet In defending last summer’s recently-disclosed sale of 103 acres in Juliette for just $1,000 per acre, some Monroe County commissioners have said that taxpayers didn’t lose money on the deal. They say that’s because the Develop ment Authority of Monroe County had given the prop erty to the county in 2009 at no charge. But there appears to be few records supporting that claim. Monroe County commis sioners apologized at their April 19 meeting for not following the law in how they advertised the sale. The county didn’t advertise the land at least 15 days before taking bids, didn’t advertise the entire acreage to be sold and didn’t take a formal vote to sell the land. But commissioner Eddie Rowland said the Develop ment Authority appears to have given that property to the county in 2009 at no charge. Commissioner John Ambrose agreed, claiming the county actually made money on the deal. And indeed, the Monroe County tax assessors’ office shows no dollar amount on the 2009 transaction.
