W here were
you 50 years
ago? Most
people can’t
remember last week, and
you want me to remember
five decades back?
For those born after
1972,50 years ago is
almost ancient history.
To put it in perspective,
those alive in 1972, think
50 years before to 1922 - a
time even before the De
pression. That was ancient
history (at least by current
thinking). Why am I ask
ing about things that oc
curred half a century ago?
April 1972 was
my first time in
Georgia and in
Bolingbroke.
That was high
school spring
break. I asked my
parents if I
could go to
Florida with
my room
mate (I at
tended a Wisconsin board
ing school - Go Packers!),
and they said yes. When
we got to Fort Lauderdale,
I called home (collect calls
back then) to tell my par
ents that we arrived safely.
My mother asked to speak
to Johns parents (thinking
CJJw4\_
they were there).
It was then that I told her
that his parents weren’t
around because we had
hitchhiked to Florida.
The phone went dead.
My mother said, “Speak
to your father.” They had
assumed I was travelling
with John’s parents. But
they never asked, and I
never told them of our
hitchhiking plans.
In my 17-year old mind,
I thought - don’t tell them
unless they ask. At that
point, there really wasn’t
much they could do as I
was 1,200 miles away.
Pre-1950, financially
strapped travelers (and
hobos) rode the rails. After
the advent of the
interstate highway
system, those same
travelers hitchhiked.
In the ‘60s and 70s
everyone (under age
30) hitchhiked. That
was because
most families
only had one
car.
Almost no
high schooler and few
college kids could afford
one; we hitched rides -
everywhere. In college,
my father took me back to
school by dropping me off
at the nearest interstate on-
ramp. Stick out my thumb
and two hours later, I was

in my dorm room. Driving
cross country, you literally
saw hitchhikers at almost
every on-ramp - especially
the well-traveled, spring
break corridors to Florida.
Hitchhiking was high
adventure for a high
school junior. You never
knew who would pick you
up, their profession (or
none), their destination, or
the condition of their car.
I think many picked us up
so they had someone to
help push if their car broke
down.
What they all seemed
to have was a 6-pack for
the drive. Two beers later,
50 miles down the road;
you’d be dropped off to
start the process all over
again. Thumb out, car
stops, throw your pack in
the back seat, exchange
pleasantries,
and get offered a
beer. Whether it was 7 am
or 6 pm, every driver had
beer and pot. Neither John
nor I smoked but we did
accept the beers.
On our way to Florida,
up in Indiana, we got a
ride to Cincinnati. It was
around 9 pm, the driver
dropped us off downtown,
near the bus station.
Thinking we’d outsmart
