Track Dogs racing to state

After securing 2AAA
region championships in
both boys and girls track
& field last week, the Mary
Persons teams moved on to
the AAA Sectional Quali
fier May 6-7 hosted by
Greater Atlanta Christian
School in Norcross. The
top eight finishers in each
event qualified to compete
in the State Championships
May 12-14 in Carrollton.
The Mary Persons Lady
Bulldogs will send four
relay teams and individual
qualifiers in seven events
to the State Meet. The
Gentleman Bulldogs will
send two relay teams and
individual qualifiers in four
individual events to State.
The Mary Persons Track
& Field coach is Llonisha
McElhaney.
In field events Ty Dumas
was 6th in the high jump at
5’10” and Kaethen Bowers
was 8th in the triple jump
with 41’2”. Qua’Nesha
Brown was 4th in discus at
113’, and Anaja Lucear was
7th in triple jump at 33’6.5”.
In track events Kaethen
Bowers finished 7th in the
400m dash at 51.14, Seth
Davis was 8th in the 110m
hurdles at 16.23. For the
girls Campbell Brown was
2nd in the 200m dash at
24.97 and 5th in the 100m
dash at 12.35. Ella Hoover
was 8th in the 800m run at
2:37 and 7th in the 1600m
rim at 5:58. Abbey Stem-
bridge finished 8th in the
3200m run at 13:22, and
Damaria Scandrett was 8th
in the 400m dash.
The girls 4 x 100m relay
team was 3rd at section
als at 48.87; the 4 x 200m
relay was 1st at 1:43, the 4
x 400m relay team was 5th
at 4:16 and the 4 x 800m
relay team was 7th at 10:38.

The boys 4 x 200m
relay team finished 8th at
sectionals at 1:33, and the
4 x 400m relay team placed
7th at 3:33. Members of
the 4 x 200m relay include

Duke Watson, Champ
Brantley. Members of the 4
x 400m relay team includes
Kaethen Bowers, Marquis
Rice, Jake Lavinka, Tripp

MP named tops in Region 2-AAA

Mary Persons won the
2021-22 Georgia Athletic
Directors Association Re
gions Bank Directors Cup
for Region 2AAA by ac
cumulating the most points
for the region standings
of its athletic teams. The
Directors Cup recognizes
athletic departments in
the Georgia High School
Association (GHSA) clas
sifications that have shown
superior performance.
Mary Persons accumu
lated 555 points to put it
in first place, 363 in girls’
sports and 192 in boys’
sports. Co-ed sports were
assigned to the gender with
the most participants in
the sport. In the Directors
Cup ranking in 2AAA this
year, Pike County finished
2nd to Mary Persons with
416 points, and Crisp
County finished 3rd with
309 points. Other schools
in the region are Americus-
Sumter, Jackson, Upson-
Lee, Peach and Central
Macon.
Among all AAA schools
in the GHSA, Mary Per
sons was 10th in points,
7th in girls sports and 16th
in boys sports. Greater
Atlanta Christian High
School was 1st with 1,050
points, followed by Oconee
County (989) and West
minster (884).
Mary Persons also won
the Directors Cup for
2AAA in 2020-21 with
717 points. Last year the
total for Mary Persons
girls teams was 465 (1st in
the region) and for boys
teams was 252 (4th in the
region). In 2019-20 Mary
Persons was in 2AAAA
and was 3rd in Direc
tors Cup points at 270; in
2018-19 Mary Persons was
2nd with 652 points. In the
preceding four years while
in 2 AAAA, Mary
Persons finished
4th, 2nd, 3rd and
4th in Directors
Cup points.
The Georgia
Athletic Directors
Association has
presented the cup
annually since
1999-2000, includ
ing a trophy and
banner. There are
26 sports included
in the scoring;
there are tiebreak
ers to eliminate
any ties.

Making a splash? MP adds swim team
After adding its increasing successful
bass fishing team a couple of seasons ago,
Mary Persons is about to add another wa
ter sport to its athletic agenda. In 2022-23
students at Mary Persons will be able to try
out for the swim team.
The Monroe County Board of Education
learned on May 10 that Schon Wood, a
special education teacher at Mary Persons,
will coach the Mary Persons swim team.
Practice will begin on Oct. 10, with the
first competition on Oct. 24. The end of
the season will be Jan. 27 with finals Feb.
2-4 at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center.
The team will practice at Swim Macon,
5097 Northside Dr., Macon.
The Georgia High School Association
combines classes A-AAA for swimming
and diving competition. It limits compe
titions to 10, exclusive of the state meet.
Boys and girls compete separately in swim
events.
Wood will receive a supplement of
$2,500 for coaching the swim team.
