BULLDOGS
Continued from Front
Nelson said he feels
good about the staff he’s
assembled on short notice
after the Burdette brothers
landed new jobs.
“They’re all good people
and people I’ve known
a while,” said Nelson.
“They’ve all got good
resumes and are highly
recommended. We’re in
good shape from where
we were, having to replace
three coaches. We did
pretty good.”
The Bulldogs return
3-year starting quarterback
Logan Hickman and run
ning back Duke Watson,
who broke the single
season rushing record in
the fall as a sophomore.
Nelson said the biggest
challenge will be replacing
senior linemen Austin Starr
and Jarvis Germany, both
of whom will play college
football in the fall.
The Bulldogs went 7-4
last year and advanced
to Round 2 of the state
playoffs.
Nelson said they have a
lot of players out sick this
spring, more than they ever
had during COVID. In
addition to the 75 players
currently in grades 9-11,
Nelson said they had 49
freshmen in a separate
spring prac
tice earlier this
month. After
taking two weeks
off, MP football
will resume sum
mer workouts
June 6.
Meanwhile
MP has released
its 2022 football
schedule. With
MP’s Region
2-AAA dropping
Crisp County,
Americus and
Central Macon,
the Bulldogs
Oct. 21 OPEN
Oct. 28 Upson-Lee

will only have four region
games and so will have six
non-region games. Nelson
said the result is the tough
est non-region slate he’s
had since he’s been here.
The Bulldogs will go on
the road for the first time
in recent memory for its
opening scrimmage against
Class AAAAAA Hous
ton County at Freedom
Field on Aug. 13. Then the
Bulldogs open at Mercer
in the Macon Touchdown
Classic against Northeast
Macon, which advanced
to the third round of
the playoffs last year, on
Saturday, Aug. 20. MP
opens at home on Aug. 26
against former region rival
Spalding. Then the Bull
dogs host the 2021 Class A
private champion Trinity
Christian on Sept. 2 and

play at Haralson County on

Sept. 16 the Bulldogs host
Columbus on Sept. 23 and
then play at Class A private
Prince Avenue Christian in
Athens on Sept. 30. Prince
Avenue lost in the state
finals last year to Trinity
Christian. Bulldog fans
won’t be able to stay to

UGA plays at Missouri
the following Saturday,
Oct. 1. Finally, MP begins
region play at Jackson in
the Red Devils’ renovated
stadium in the Backyard
Brawl on Oct. 7. It’s sure to
be chippy after MP snuck
away with a miracle win
on the final play last year.
On Oct. 14 MP goes to
powerhouse Peach County.
After a second open date
Former Pike County head coach Brad
Webber is now an MP assistant.
