Millard Berry Grimes, Jr.
March 8,1930 - May 3, 2022
Millard Berry Grimes Jr., of Athens,
former owner of The Monroe County Re
porter from 2003-07, died May 3,2022, at
the age of 92, at his home. Mr. Grimes had
a long career as a newspaper columnist,
entrepreneur, and author.
From LaGrange, he graduated from
UGA in 1951 and went to work for the
Columbus Ledger-Enquirer as a copy
editor. He was a member of the staff that won the 1955
Pulitzer Prize for coverage of the clean-up of corruption
in Phenix City, the then-notorious Alabama town that was
just across the Chattahoochee River from Columbus.
In 1955, Grimes had become restless and, on the very
day the Pulitzer Prize was announced, he resigned from
the Ledger to become the editor of the Phenix Citizen, a
new weekly newspaper in Phenix City that he founded
with financial backing from a local banker.
In 1965, he was instrumental in organizing the Athens
Daily News, a morning newspaper in Athens. Grimes
never actually worked for the Daily News, but helped hire
the original staff, including teenaged sportswriter Lewis
Gizzard, who would later become a famous humorist.
In 1969, Grimes finally got another chance to rim a
newspaper his way when he persuaded a group of inves
tors to buy the Opelika Daily News, a small newspaper in
Opelika, AL. Grimes took over the paper and moved with
his family to Opelika. He soon changed the name to the
Opelika-Auburn News, added a Sunday morning edition
and vastly increased the circulation of the paper. In 1977,
the newspaper sold to the Thomson Newspaper Group for
eight times the original investment.
Between 1973 and 2013, he published, owned or partly
owned more than 40 newspapers in Georgia and Ala
bama, including the Reporter, The Clayton News/Daily,
The Henry Herald, The Rockdale Citizen, The Enterprise
Ledger, The Athens Observer, the Manchester Star-Mer
cury and The Meriwether Vindicator.
He also was chief writer and editor of “The Last Lino
type: the Story of Georgia and its Newspapers Since World
War II,” a book published by Mercer University Press in
1985. He also served as the president of the Georgia Press
Association in 1986 and the Alabama Press Association in
the early 1970s.
In 1990, he acquired two statewide magazines, Georgia
Journal, which focused on history and culture, and the
statewide business magazine, Georgia Trend. In 2011, he
sold the last of his regular newspaper holdings, the Star-
Mercury Group based in Manchester, GA, and seemed
bound for retirement at the age of 81, but a few months
later, he embarked on another adventure, founding Buford
Weekly Illustrated, a newspaper to serve the Atlanta sub
urban town of Buford. He also set himself to write a novel,
completing “The Last New Dealer,” a political fantasy set
during the 1992 presidential primaries, just after his 88th
birthday. The Last New Dealer was published by Page
Publishing company in 2020.

JUST THE WAY IT IS by Sloan Oliver
Yes, lock her up, really
O MG, Hillary
is guilty (a
minimum) of
conspiracy. The
chants “lock her up” were
correct. If she’s found guilty,
she MUST go to
prison. “Smoking
gun” testimony of
her guilt occurred
last week during the
trial of Michael Suss-
man. Unfortunately,
our Democrat
media said
nothing.
IN 2016,
Hillary Clinton soooooo
wanted to become president
that her campaign concocted
a scheme to frame Candi
date Trump by claiming he
“colluded with the Russians”
to get elected. (Mind you,
Hillary and her media syco
phants never said what col
lusion was or how collusion
changed votes. They claimed
“collusion” and allowed you
to interpret its meaning.)
The Democrat scheme was
- send Hillarys campaign
lawyer (Michael Sussman)
to the FBI with a false story
about Trump-Russia. Suss-
man’s accusation led to an
FBI investigation, spying on
Trumps campaign, spying
on his presidency, and a
3-year Democrat/media/FBI
witch-hunt effort to impeach
and destroy his presidency.
Muellers 2-year special coun
sel investigation completely
exonerated Trump. (Dems
and Libs - that means there
was NO Trump collusion.) I
don’t care if you like Trump
or not; he was the victim of
a frame-up. So, in 2019, At
torney General Barr assigned
John Durham to investigate
how the Trump-Russia hoax
started in the first
place.
DURHAM’S
INVESTIGATION
has been (very) slow
and methodical.
Sussman, Durham’s
first case, is on
trial for lying
to the FBI (in
2016). He was
the Hillary lawyer who went
to the FBI. Last week, Robby
Mook, Hillary’s campaign
manager, testified (under
oath) that Hillary, herself,
knew about and approved
the Trump-Russia collusion
hoax from the very begin
ning. Hillary was in on the
conspiracy the entire time.
She even gave TV interviews
in which she accused Trump
of her concocted collusion
hoax. Hillary is disgusting,
and deserves prison. What
the DOJ does about her guilt
is something else entirely. I
have ZERO confidence the
DOJ will do what’s right,
and even less in the FBI. As
much as the Dems and the
Deep State (the DOJ, FBI,
CIA, intel agencies, etc.) tried
to destroy him, President
Trump fought back and
proved that Washington DC
is a Swamp controlled by the
Deep State.
IF TRUMP proved the
existence of the Swamp and
the Deep State, Elon Musk
is proving the complete
dishonesty of Big Media,
Big Tech, Democrats and
the entire Leftist Cabal (LC).
Elon’s battle with them began
last month when he an
nounced a 9.2% purchase of
Twitter, becoming its largest
shareholder. That was an
OMG moment for the LC.
Why? Because Musk has
the audacity to actually say
he believes in free speech.
He said that because Twit
ter, Facebook, Instagram,
Google, and the rest of social
media and Big Tech don’t
believe in free speech. Project
Veritas proved the LC doesn’t
believe in free speech when
Veritas released a video of
Sim Murugesan, a Twitter
executive, saying “Twit
ter does not believe in free
speech.” Murugesan went
on, “He (referring to Musk)
is a capitalist and we operate
more like very socialist. Were
all commie as f**k.” The
Leftist Cabal wants to control
your speech to advance
their narrative. They do that
by silencing and censoring
anyone who disagrees with
them or who goes against
their narrative.
LOOK TO President
Trump as proof that the cabal
silences opposition. He had
over 80 million followers on
Twitter yet Twitter banned
him when he tweeted things
they didn’t like. Facebook
regularly denies and takes
down postings that its
Marxists executives disagree
with; same with Instagram.
And Google uses algorithms
that direct searches away
from conservative websites,
effectively hiding them. Con
servative website, Breitbart
showed that its Google traffic
was down 99.7% during the
2020 election. Throw in the
fact that Big Tech tracks your
movements, monitors what
websites you visit, listens to
what you say, and sells data
about you - it’s obvious that
Big Tech spies on us without
our consent.
TWITTER AND Big
Tech’s war against Musk
heated up several weeks
ago for two reasons. First,
Elon announced he wanted
to purchase 100% of Twit
ter. His purchase is on hold
because Twitter is unable to
prove its number of users.
For example, an audit found
that fully 49.3% of Biderfs
22-million Twitter followers
were fake. (Hahaha - makes
me question if 49.3% of
Biderfs 2020 voters were fake
as well.) Second, and even
worse (for you Democrats)
Musk announced that he
has always voted Democrat
but will vote Republican in
the future. Wow, Democrat
heads exploded. How dare
the world’s richest man vote
his conscious and NOT vote
“as told?” Elon finally realizes
what you vile Dems repre
sent - against free speech, for
censorship; against secure
borders, for killing babies;
against law and order, for
racism (everything is racist);
