The Interstate replaced Old Man Noll
Some remnants of the way things once were still dot the landscape and make
one think of what the area was like before interstates and super-highways.
Old man Noll was a mean old
soul, he lived across the hill
I didn’t know him very well, and
now I never will
He had some sheep that grazed
his land and he was very old
All the kids would stay away; we
knew he was a scold
By Sloan Oliver
sloanoliver@earthlink.net
S adly, most of us
don’t acknowl
edge the wise sage
of those much
older than us. It’s
usually decades
later, long after
they’re gone that we
realize what we’ve
lost. We regret not having talked
more with parents or grandpar
ents who arrived at Ellis Island
early in the 20th century, lived
before electricity was brought,
survived the Depression, or fought
in WWII. They could tell us much
but in our youthful arrogance, we
didn’t need their advice. Hubris is
thine name.
Yeah, but our best tree house was
on his hill
And our navy sailed on his pond
The years have only brought me
pain
Now I’m sad the old man’s gone
How often do we hear someone/
grandparents say, “I remember
when .” We all remember
things as they were. Simpler times,
when life was less complicated; be
fore the land was cleared to
make way for new highways
and pop-up subdivisions.
We see that right here, right
now at the corner of Hwy-41
and Sanders Road with the
Bolingbroke Manor subdivi
sion.
Just two or three years ago,
that land was forested.
I’m sure that kids from
neighboring Lor
raine Woods hunted
squirrels and rabbits
now occupied by new
houses and cul de sacs.
I’ve only lived
in Bolingbroke
for 8-plus years,
but I remember
when there
were fewer houses and less traffic.
I talk to old timers who remember
when Pate Road was still dirt (the
1980’s). For those who grew up
around these parts 50 and 60 years
ago, the changes must be disheart
ening - inevitable but sad because
things will never be as they were.
‘Cause now the freeway rolls
where old man Noll
Used to run his sheep in the
meadow
And as you drive by, if you really
try
You still can see his shadow
The Interstate Highway Sys
tem came into existence when
President Eisenhower signed the
Federal Aid Highway Act of 1956.
Eisenhower pushed the interstate
system largely due to experiences
he had moving men, vehicles,
and equipment across the United
States and Germany. In 1919, as
a young Army officer, he partici
pated in a cross-country military
convoy, from Washington DC to
San Francisco to assess our high
way system. It took the 81-vehicle
convoy over 60-days, at 5.5 mph
on muddy, almost non-existent
roads. Then, during WWII, Eisen
hower saw the effectiveness of the
German Autobahns, particularly
for defense purposes. Those two
experiences convinced him that
America needed better highways,
for both defense and economic
purposes. And so it began.
Now, old man Noll was a mean
old soul, at least the kids thought so
But we were much, much
younger then, and now
I just don’t know
The way it was when it was his,
the land was clear and free
The land was life and with his
wife was all that he could see
The biggest change, the most
disrupting change had to have
been the interstate highways - In
terstate 75 and 475. Try to imag
ine this county, this community
without (or before) 1-75 or 475.
Those were simpler times, more
pastoral. US Highway 41 was the
main north-south route through
Georgia.
Every Midwest Florida-bound
traveler passed through Boling
broke; gassed up here but likely
stayed the night in Macon. Then
