With God’s grace, Dad

I t's amazing, as I get
older, that I can see
with greater clar-
ity-not with
natural eyes, but
with the eyes of my
heart. As time goes
by, I can see with
clear 20/20 vision
what a great dad I
had. Sometimes,
we don't ap
preciate our
fathers as we
should until
later in life.
Today, as I thought
about my dad, memories
have surfaced that make
me love him even more.
When I was a little girl
he never raised his voice
in anger, but if he raised
an eyebrow and called
my name with a "certain"
tone, I knew I had better
straighten up. He only
spanked me once, and
it was at my mother's insis
tence. I had been misbe
having that day and was
driving her crazy. Plus, I
had been picking on my
little brother most of the
day. Dad pulled off his belt
and gave me two swats.
I think it hurt him more
than it did me.
When I was a teenager,
Dad could have lost his
temper when I had a "little
accident" while driving his
car. I was on my way to see
one of my cousins, when a
little pig ran out in front of
me. I swerved to miss the
pig, and the car skidded
over into a shal
low ditch.
The accident
didn't scratch or
dent the car, but
it knocked one of
the back tires out
of alignment. Re
luctantly,
I returned
back
home.
Dad
was sitting on the porch,
when I pulled up in the
yard. I told him what hap
pened and was mumbling
under my breath, "I'm go
ing to be grounded forev
er!" He examined the car,
and with a skeptical smile
on his face, he said, “It was
a pig, huh?” I guess he
was expecting the dog or
the deer excuse. I humbly
replied, “It really was a pig,
Dad.” To this day, I don’t
know where that little crit
ter came from!
But fortunately, Dad
believed me, and I was
forgiven the mishap. I will
never forget the grace,
mercy and unconditional
love he modeled that day.
My dad was always
interested in politics, and I
recall that he liked Presi
dent Reagan. On May 20,
1981, in a Proclamation
of Father's Day, President
Ronald Reagan stated:
"'Train up a child in the
way he should go: and
when he is old, he will not
depart from it.” Reagan
added:
"Children, vulnerable
and dependent, desper
ately need security, and
it has ever been a duty
and a joy of fatherhood
to offer it. Being a father
requires strength...and
more than a little cour-
age...to persevere, to fight
discouragement, and
to keep working for the
family. With God's grace,
fathers find the patience
to teach, the fortitude to
provide, the compassion
to comfort, and the mercy
to forgive. Let us...express
our thanks and affection
to our fathers, whether we
can do so in person or in
prayer."
True, there are no perfect
fathers, but it pleases our
Heavenly Father when we
honor them. Father's Day
is Sunday, June 19. As we
honor our fathers (living
or deceased), may we ex
press our heartfelt thanks
and love for them.

Check out Story Time at Monroe County
Library on Wednesdays at 11 a.m.
Wednesday mornings at 11 a.m. are a great time to listen to a story at Monroe County
Library this summer. The program is held in the childrens section of the library On June 8
Michele Dreisbach and Sunni (short for ‘Sunshine’), her therapy dog, read a story about Curi
ous George and his flight in the sky on a huge kite to children and their caregivers.
Sunni, who is four years old, was eager to meet the children and be petted, but he listened at
tentively during the story. Dreisbach told the children she and Sunni will be back to visit with
them again at Story Time on June 22. The library staff had a craft ready for children to make
after the story or to take home with them to work on later.
The topic of Story Time on June 15 will be a lesson about money and spending from a favor
ite book. Story Time on July 20 will also teach about “Fin’ ancial Fun.”
