(Photo/Will Davis) But Dawley still gets 10 years in prison By Will Davis publisher@mymcr.net One of 12 jurors who found a High Falls man not guilty on 10 of 11 child abuse counts on Friday said he thought prosecutors were on a witch hunt and that the judges 10-year prison sentence was harsh. “That was a stiff, stiff penalty’ said the juror, who spoke to the Reporter on the condition of anonym ity. “I was shocked he got that much time.” The juror said he could feel the gasps from fellow jurors when Judge Bill Fears sentenced C.J. Dawley to 10 years in prison on Friday. Several jurors as sumed that the judge thought they had reached the wrong verdict since he “threw the book” at Dawley for the only guilty verdict, a cruelty to children count for throwing his son against a wall. But the juror said that on all the other counts, the state failed to present enough evidence to prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt. Dawley was found not guilty of 10 charges related to accusations he sexually abused his daughter in 2020 when she was 14 and his son from 2016-19 when he was ages 15-18. Both children testified against Dawley. The son had lived with his mother until he was 15 when he got into trouble in North Carolina. (Photo/Pam Davis) Waste facility eyed for English Rd. site A waste company is asking Monroe County for permission to build a “green” $150 million mu nicipal waste facility on 274 acres on English Road just off 1-75, north of the rec department. Triology WC has a con tract to buy 274 acres from Newton Timber to build what’s described as a green waste conversion and en ergy park that would accept municipal waste. Trilogy has applied for rezoning the property, which is split by English Road, from agricultural to industrial. Trilogy is also asking the county for a conditional use permit to build the waste recycling facility. The request is slated to go before the Monroe County zoning board at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, July 25. County commissioners would have a final say at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 2. Jimmy Thwait is han dling the deal for Newton Timber and said the project would be very green and very new and modern. “It’s kind of a cool thing,” said Thwait. He said the plant will be built far away from the road. “Nobody will ever see it,” said Thwart. The ap plication says it could take 3 years to build. David Gattie, an associate professor in UGAs College of Engineering and a senior fellow with UGAs Center for International Trade and Security, said that contrary to some media reports, Plant Scherer is not a huge emit ter of carbon dioxide. Gattie, who watched Plant Scherer being built while growing up in Macon, said that Plant Scherer emits less than 1 per cent of the carbon emissions from the U.S. power sector. “On a carbon emissions and climate change level,” said Gattie, “Plant Scherer is hav ing no impact at all.” The Supreme Court ruled in a 6-3 decision last week that the EPA exceeded its authority in trying to regulate carbon emissions. Chief Justice John Roberts wrote that the EPA must be able to cite a law passed by Congress before imposing rules on power plants. The EPA had tried to use the 1970 Clean Air Act as its authority to regulate carbon emissions, but Roberts said that wasn’t good enough.
