PASTOR S CORNER by Rev. Clarence Thrower
Spotlight on Local Churches
God's word is infallible
solution to problems of youth
n 2019, The Pew Research Center
published a study of the enormity of
problems challenging young people
of today Highlighted among their
findings were: Single parent households.
Growing up too fast and teen pregnancy.
Drug/alcohol use and abuse. Material
ism. Stress and time management. School
violence. Peer pressure,
bullying and cyberbullying
In looking to the Bible
to find answers to these
increasingly daily assaults, I
first turned to Psalm 119:1-
2:1. Blessed are the unde
filed in the way, who walk
in the law of the Lord.
2. Blessed are they that
keep his testimonies, and
that seek him with the
whole heart.
The text of Psalm 119:9 is
self-challenging. “Where
withal shall a young man
cleanse his way? By taking heed thereto
according to thy word”.
Mothers may plead, fathers may use the
rod, but until the young person decides
in his own mind and in his own heart to
move toward self-discovery, little to no
progress is achieved. They must whole
heartedly declare as in Psalm 119:10 “With
my whole heart have I sought thee. Oh
let me not wander from thy command
ments”. Psalm 119:11 “Thy word I have
I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin
against thee”. Psalm 119:12 “Blessed art
thou, O Lord: teach me thy statutes”.
I thank God that there are many seri
ous minded, forward looking, strong and
Christian young people among us who
embrace Psalm 119:18-19 “Open thou
mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous
things out of thy law”.
“I am a stranger in the earth. Hide not
thy commandments from me”.
Young David was not the only youth
who discovered that Gods word was the
infallible solution to his problems. Not
only was he not satisfied with just being
one of the gang, he expressed a desire to be
better. He wanted to know the truth about
life and what life demanded of him. These
were not just questions asked by a biblical
person long, long ago. These same ques
tions are being asked by our youth today.
To the young people in our church who
make us so proud, I say to you “the infal
lible solution to the problem lies in the
hands of the church”. The church with its
God, the church with its Bible, the church
with its hymnals, the church with its
prayer altar and the church with its heav
enly guarantee that “the gates of hell shall
not prevail against it”. Matthew 16:18.
Our schools do all that they can, but they
don’t have the solution. The Boy Scouts,
the Girl Scouts, the YMCA, the YWCA,
state homes, correctional institutions,
rehab centers, recreational centers, parks,
play grounds and even jails don’t have the
infallible solution.
The infallible solutions are found in
Psalm 119:101, “I have
refrained my feet from ev
ery evil way, that I might
keep thy word”.
102, “I have not depart
ed from thy judgments:
for thy hast taught me.
103, “How sweet are
thou words unto my taste!
Yea, sweeter than honey
to my mouth”.
104, “Through the pre
cepts I get understanding:
therefore I hate every false
way”.
105, “Thy word is a lamp
unto my feet, and a light unto my path”.
106, “I have sworn and I will perform it,
that I will keep thy righteous judgment”.
We thank God for David who said, “Thy
word have I hid in mine heart, that I
might not sin against thee. Psalm 119:11.
We thank God for Daniel who purposed
in his heart that he would not defile him
self. Daniel 1:8.
We thank God for Ruth who declared
“whither thougoest, I will go; and where
thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall
be my people and thy God my God”. Ruth
1:16.
We thank God for Joseph who heeded:
“Give to him that asketh thee, and from
him that would borrow of thee turn not
thou away”. Matthew 5:42.
I leave you with four things to remem
ber: God’s word is
A comfort to the distressed.
A pillow for the dying.
A sure foundation.
The sword of the spirit.
