Beech Tree keeps 9-11 rock in MC family
By Steve Reece
stevereece'-gmail.com
A Vietnam Veteran on Whittle Road painted this patriotic rock after 9-11, and Beechtree Supply has taken the rock to his family.
After the 9/11 attacks in
2001, US Army Ranger
veteran Jehoida (Jay)
Buchanan painted an
American flag on a large
piece of granite setting in
his yard on Whittle Lane
in a display of patrio
tism. Buchanan served in
the Green Beret Special
Forces from 1966-69, vol
unteering for three tours
in Viet Nam. He passed
away in October of 2008.
Eventually David and
Susan Stone purchased
his former home and
they let the stone remain
in their yard until June
29 when it was moved
5 miles away to a new
location at the home of
Buchanans daughter,
Cherann Buchanan, at
120 Lane Forest Drive.
Cherann’s mother met
the Stones at church and
Cherann asked them if
she could have the rock
for sentimental reasons.
Jay Buchanan has passed
away. They were more
than happy to oblige.
Brad Smith of Beech
Tree Supply in Boling-
broke volunteered to
transport the 6’ x 4’ x
24” piece of granite that
he estimated to weigh at
least two tons with his
truck mounted forklift.
His son, Wiley, 15, and
Brice Whitley, 15, also as
sisted in maneuvering the
huge chunk of stone to its
present location where it
will proudly remain for
decades to come, a 9/11
tribute easily visible to
any that pass by.
Judge from MC forces Houston
County to cover trans surgery
THE PROFESSIONAL CHOICE
FOR LANDSCAPE MATERIALS
IN MIDDLE GEORGIA
A federal judge who
lives in Monroe County
ruled last month that the
Houston County Sheriff’s
Office must cover gender
change surgery to one of its
investigators.
U.S. District Court Judge
Marc Treadwell, who lives
in Monroe County, found
the county violated Sgt.
Anna Langes rights under
Title VII of the Civil Rights
Act of 1964. It is believed to
be the first ruling of its kind
in the South, said Langes
lawyer, David Brown, legal
director of the Transgender
Legal Defense & Education
Fund.
“This just shows that
justice will prevail and big
otry and ignorance wont
win,” Lange, 50, said after
the ruling. “Hopefully this
will send a message to the
trans community and their
employers who withhold
trans healthcare that this
wont be tolerated.”
Lange has worked in law
enforcement for 25 years,
including 16 years at the
Houston County Sheriff’s
Office. She has been, by all
accounts, an “exceptional
employee” and a highly
regarded investigator,
Treadwell wrote in his
order.
Lange said she specializes
in elder care investigations
but takes on all kinds of
cases ranging from theft to
homicide.
Lange was a male at birth
but in 2017 came out as a
transgender woman. Fol
lowing recommendations
of her doctor, two psychol
ogists and a surgeon, Lange
determined she needed the
operation.
In April 2018, Lange met
with Kenneth Carter, the
county’s personnel director,
told him she was transgen
der and asked if the proce
dure was covered under the
county’s health insurance
plan. Carter said such a
surgery was excluded from
the county’s coverage.
Later the same day, Lange
met with the sheriff and
disclosed her transgender
status.
Talton, first elected sheriff
in 1972, told his investiga
tor he did not “believe in
sex changes,” according to
court records. But the sher
iff granted Lange’s request
to dress as a female, while
warning her she would
need a “tough skin” in deal
ing with coworkers.
The ruling could mean
other counties including
Monroe will be required
to cover gender change
surgery as well.
