Hunter qualifies as independent for District 4
David Hunter has qualified to
run for Monroe County com
missioner in District 4 and will
be on the November ballot as an
independent challenging incum
bent George Emami.
Hunter submitted about
230 signatures to the Monroe
County elections office before
the Tuesday, July 12 deadline.
That’s more than the 206 signa
tures required for him to appear
on the ballot as an independent
candidate. Hunter, who lives in
the River Walk subdivision, is
the chief construction officer for
the Atlanta Housing Authority.
While he’s running as an
independent, Hunter has only
voted in Democrat primaries
and never voted in a Republican
primary since he started vot
ing in Monroe County in 2004,
according to the elections office.
Hunter’s website, www.bdavid-
himter.com, says his campaign
will focus on affordable hous
ing, sustainability and program
management.
Emami won the Republican
primary in May over challenger
Travis Daniel.
District 4 includes northern
Monroe County and the High
Falls area.
Dublin pair charged with trafficking cocaine
JACKSON JORDAN
By Steve Reece
stevereece@gmail.com
What started out as a
routine traffic stop resulted
in a major drug bust when
around 6.5 pounds of
cocaine and a large bundle
of cash were found in
white 2013 Hyundai So
nata stopped by Cpl. Jaleel
Brown for dark window
tint on June 29 around 1:30
p.m. According to the in
cident report, the stop was
made near Hwy. 83 on 1-75
S and as Brown asked for a
driver’s license and insur
ance information, driver
James Edward Jackson,
33, of Dublin immediately
wanted to know why he
was stopped. Brown told
him he would be happy to
explain the reason once he
had his information.
The female passenger,
April Charlene Jordan, 28,
also of Dublin provided
Brown proof of insurance
from the glove compart
ment while Jackson looked
through his phone for
a picture of his license.
While waiting on Jackson,
Brown noticed the pres
ence of freshly sprayed air
freshener coming from the
vehicle.
He then asked Jackson
to step out of the vehicle to
speak with him at the rear
of the vehicle when Jack-
son eventually found a pic
ture of his license. Brown
told him the windows
were too dark and Jackson
then explained that his girl
owned the car and he told
her about the window tint
but that women do not
listen.
He said they were com
ing from Tanger Outlet
where they had visited
the Polo store and walked
around the complex for
a few hours and were
headed back to Dublin.
Brown then had him sit
on the concrete wall while
he spoke with Jordan who
told him they were com
ing from the Atlanta area
where they were visiting
a friend of Jackson’s and
they had stayed in an
Atlanta hotel the previ
ous night. When asked
what hotel, she then
changed her story and
told Brown they came
up this morning and
did not stay at a hotel.
While running
Jackson’s informa
tion Brown spoke with
him about Tanger Outlet
and he said did not buy
anything because the
prices were too high, and
the polo store didn’t have
anything that he really
wanted. He also confirmed
that Jordan was with him
the whole time and they
did not separate during the
trip.
Brown then asked him
that if two people in the
same car, going to and
coming from the same
place, at the same time,
in the same vehicle,
shouldn’t they have the
same story line about
their travel plans? Jackson
stated he agreed. Jackson’s
information returned and
indicated he was currently
on probation for some type
of domestic and family
crimes.
Brown began issuing
Jackson a citation for the
tint violation and asked
him if he was responsible
for everything inside of the
vehicle to which he stated
he was not. Brown also
asked if anything illegal
was inside of the vehicle to
which he denied but would
not consent to a search.
Brown then radioed for
deputy Jeff Thompson to
assist with a K-9 and after
the dog alerted on the ve
hicle, two blocks of a white
hard substance suspected
to be cocaine were found
wrapped in tissue inside
a white bookbag laying
on the seat. Also inside
the bag was another small
Ziploc bag of suspected co
caine along with a smaller
block of suspected cocaine
wrapped in brown tape.
Included in the bag was a
bundle of cash wrapped in
several black rubber bands.
Both subjects were then
handcuffed, read their
rights, and taken to the
Monroe County Justice
Center for processing on
warrants for trafficking
cocaine. The approximate
weight of the confiscated
cocaine was 104 ounces
which was stored in evi
dence bags and logged into
the tracker system.

Central Georgia EMC
power meter after it

Nissan Altima around
10:30 p.m. on June 29.
According to the
incident report,
BARNES
deputy Justyn Weaver
was dispatched to 27
Old Cork Road where
he met with lineman
John Richards who
told him he was on a
service call for a blown
transformer when he
was approached by
Grady Barnes, 55, of
Atlanta who asked him
questions about power
to his building and home inspec

Richards told Weaver that
around 45 minutes later Barnes
returned to the home and an
alarm was sent to the EMC
dispatch center because the
meter was disconnected. He said
Barnes left in his silver Nis

Weaver drove around the area in

Weaver returned to the area and
was directed by the lineman that
Barnes had pulled into the drive
way of 100 Old Cork Road.
Weaver approached the vehicle
and saw an open bottle of Jack
Daniels whiskey in plain view. He
told Barnes he would do a prob
able cause search of his car and
that if there was a stolen meter in
his vehicle, he needed to tell him.
Barnes admitted taking the meter
and it was found on the front pas
senger side floorboard.
Barnes was arrested, advised

County Jail was charged with

Men smoke cigarettes
to mask odor of pot
The 22-year-old male
driver of a blue 2012 Ford
Mustang with a male pas
senger was smoking a ciga
rette to mask the smell of
marijuana when Cpl. Jaleel
Brown approached after
conducting a traffic stop
on 1-75 S near North Lee
Street on June 29 at about
9:05 a.m. Brown could
smell the weed as he asked
for the driver’s license and
noticed the 22-year-old
passenger from Forsyth
was also smoking a ciga
rette. Brown then asked the
driver to step to the rear of
the vehicle after he learned
he was unlicensed.
The man told the cor
poral the passenger had
just picked him up from
the airport and they were
headed to his home to
Warner Robins. He said he
played football at a higher
ed school and was home
for the summer.
The passenger said he
drove up to pick up the
man from the airport and
was going back home to
Warner Robins. His infor
mation returned as unli
censed with active warrants
for theft and fleeing out of
Houston County. Con
firming Houston County
would place a hold on the
passenger, Brown called for
deputy Jeff Thompson to
assist in a vehicle search.
Brown then arrested the
passenger for the active
warrants, and while patting
him down for weapons, the
man stated there was a gun
under the passenger seat
and that the gun was not
registered to him.
A chrome and black
Smith and Wesson 40
caliber with a 30-round
magazine was found and
learned to be “lost” out
of Taylor County. Sitting
next to the gear shift was a
small, opened glass bottle
of cognac liquor. The pas
senger was then placed in
the rear of Brown’s vehicle
and a wrecker was called.
The passenger was
charged with theft of lost
property. The driver was
cited for window tint
violation, driving without a
license and open container
and both were taken to jail.

vehicle pass near North Lee
Street on July 2 around 3:53
a.m. Williams got behind
the Jeep near Johnstonville

the driver’s watery eyes
and slurred speech as he
greeted him and asked the
49-year-old male driver
from Braselton how much
had he had to drink, and
the man responded with
“too much.” Williams then
asked for his license and to
step to the rear of his car.

on his feet and struggled
with his dexterity as he
tried to remove his li
cense from his wallet.
When asked how many
alcoholic beverages he had
consumed he answered
seven beers and two vodka
drinks.
