INCIDENT REPORTS . July 20, 2022
The following incidents were reported by the Forsyth Police Department
and the Monroe County Sheriffs Office.
Chase called off due to traffic
An Albany man remains at
large after fleeing a Monroe
County deputy in his white 2020
Dodge Charger on 1-75 N near
Hwy. 18 on July 2 around 2:30
p.m. Deputy Cody Maples was
dispatched in a BOLO to the
Charger with 4 male occupants.
From the Tift College bridge he
saw the driver go from the first
lane to the third lane without sig
naling, narrowly missing several
vehicles. Maples got behind him
as the vehicle continued at a high
rate of speed. The driver finally
came to a stop on the right shoul
der near mile marker 188.
As Maples was exiting his car
the Charger took off driving in
such a manner that vehicles were
having to drive into the emer
gency lane to avoid accidents.
At one point the driver crossed
into the path of several vehicles
causing traffic to come to almost
a standstill. At Johnstonville Road
the Charger took the exit then
returned to the interstate. Due to
heavy traffic, Maples ended the
chase.
Man crying on side of road with
blown tire arrested for DUI
Dispatch received a call to as
sist a motorist with a blown tire
near Hwy. 18 on 1-75 S on July 3
around 1:38 a.m. and Cpl. Larry
Sullivan found the 26-year-old
male driver from Gray stumbling
beside his silver 2014 Mazda with
a spare tire and jack laid out be
side his vehicle next to a shredded
tire. The car also had damage to
the passenger side that appeared
to be from striking a guardrail.
The man appeared to be cry
ing and Sullivan asked if he was
alright. He responded that it was
his first time. He was unsteady
on his feet and smelled strongly
of alcohol so Sullivan asked if
he had been drinking and he
replied that he had three beers at
a downtown Macon bar an hour
earlier. A breathalyzer returned a
high reading for alcohol. He then
agreed to a sobriety test but after
swaying, nearly falling, and miss
ing all the heel-to-toe steps he put
his hands up and stated he was
done with the test.
Sullivan asked him if he would
perform another test and the man
replied to just go ahead and take
him to jail. He was handcuffed
and taken to the Monroe County
Jail where he was cited for DUI.
DUI charge for 1-75 driver
stopped in middle lane
A Fayetteville man was charged
with DUI on July 4 after weaving
and stopping in the middle lane
of 1-75.
Sgt. Kevin Williams spotted the
vehicle and as he was trying to
catch up, he saw it following too
closely to several vehicles while
weaving in and out of traffic
nearly causing numerous acci
dents. Williams initiated a stop at
the weigh station, but the Corolla
accelerated and changed lanes.
Sgt. Chris Sherrill was able to
get in front of the vehicle and
slowly came to a stop and the
suspects vehicle narrowly struck
Sheriffs patrol vehicle several
times while slowing down.
Once the Corolla was stopped
in the middle lane of the inter
state, Williams went to the vehicle
and removed the male driver
out of the car. Deputy Courtney
Morgan then took the man to
the shoulder while deputy Tyler
Rodgers removed the Corolla
from the middle of the road and
traffic was allowed to pass. The
driver was very unsteady on his
feet and holding onto the guard
rail when Williams asked where
he was going, and he replied in
slurred speech that he was going
back home to Fayette County.
His eyes were very watery, and
Williams asked how much he
had had to drink. He answered
a couple of beers an hour ear
lier. Sherrell also found an open
container of beer in the center
console. He said did not want
to do any sobriety tests but did
agree to give a breath sample. The
breathalyzer registered a very
high alcohol concentration.
He was jailed and cited for
failure to maintain lane, follow
ing too closely, reckless driving,
failure to yield to an emergency
vehicle, open container, and DUI.
Man cited after taking
selfies in the fast lane
A man was charged with giv
ing false identification on July 4
after he was caught taking selfies
in the fast lane on 1-75 near the
Tift College exit. Officers David
Asbell and Arthur Musselman
found a man taking selfies while
trying to climb over the median.
The man did not have his iden
tification, and he gave a name
which was later found to be false.
He also gave a social security
number that consisted of more
than 9 numbers. He was arrested
for giving false identification.
Snellville man tosses
weed during stop
A 36-year-old Snellville man
was arrested after Cpl. Larry
Sullivan was given a BOLO for a
drunk driver traveling on 1-75 N
in a silver 2017 Dodge Ram 1500
pickup truck on July 4 around
5:10 a.m. Sullivan saw the vehicle
pass near North Lee Street and
got behind it where he saw it fail
ing to maintain lane and moving
back and forth within the same
lane. He activated his emergency
lights near Johnstonville Road,
and the driver slowed, began to
move right then throw an item
from the drivers side window.
Sullivan then radioed deputy
Enrique Hogan who was travel
ing just behind him to retrieve
the item. As the pickup continued
to move right, Sullivan saw the
driver also toss a white cup from
the window just before stopping.
While asking for his license Sul
livan could smell the strong odor
of alcohol as well as marijuana
and asked the driver to step out.
When asked what he threw out
the window he replied that noth
ing was thrown. He told Sullivan
he had consumed alcohol several
hours earlier before leaving a
family gathering in Tallahassee,
Fla. A breathalyzer returned a
high positive reading for alcohol.
He also agreed to field sobriety
testing and used his hands for
balance, missed several steps, and
stepped off the line.
During the one-legged-stand
test he put down his foot multiple
times. When asked to submit a
sample for a blood test, he said he
didn’t understand what it meant.
Sullivan asked if he wanted him
to read the implied consent no
tice again, he said no.
He was then arrested, hand
cuffed, and put in the rear of
Sullivans patrol vehicle. Hogan
found the yellow bag thrown
from the car which contained
pieces of marijuana inside. He
was taken to jail and cited for
DUI-refusal, failure to maintain
lane, littering, and possession and
use of drug-related objects. The
Ram was released to a licensed
sober passenger.
Two cited for disorderly
conduct at Ridgewood Apts.
Two people were cited for
disorderly conduct after a fight at
Ridgewood Apartments on Free
man Avenue on July 4 around
1:17 p.m. Deputy Jonathan was
dispatched to the apartments
where he found a woman in the
parking lot with a cut on her
forehead. She told Sullivan her
boyfriend had hit her in the face.
She said that he had texted her
to come get her stuff and when
she arrived, she found him in bed
with another woman. She said
they got into an argument and
the man began dragging her out
of the apartment when he struck
her with his fist.
The man told Sullivan when she
showed up, she began causing a
scene because he was with an
other woman. He stated he asked
her to leave numerous times, but
she refused. He added that she
got physical with him first and he
was only defending himself. The
woman found in the bed agreed
with his statement. The man was
then taken to the Monroe County
Detention center and cited for
disorderly conduct. The jilted
woman was taken to the Monroe
County Hospital for her injuries,
cited for disorderly conduct and
given an appearance ticket.
